There is no such thing as "overkill", there is underkill however....

I have found the big bores do much less meat damnage than high velocity calibers like a 243, 270 or 300 and I don't hear remarks on them as to overkill....

I have shot many deer, a elk or two and lots of plainsgame with my 416 and 404 and the meat bruising is nominal, I would have thought Will of all people would know that...

I will state that any Nosler will sometimes blow the front end off and when it does the meat damage is considerable and I have ruined both shoulders on ocassion with the 286 gr. Nosler in my 26 inch barrel 9.3x62 at 2520 FPS, but thats fast for a 9.3x62..When a Nolser blows the front end off then you need to go up to the next weight bullet, but in the case of a 9.3, they only make one weight...

Ray,

Hot damn, now we can argue 'bout somethin'.

Surely you must agree that a 9.3x62 isn't NEEDED to kill whitetails. Now, I don't care what anyone uses to hunt deer with, but a 9.3 is overkill.

There may be some that eat everything from a deer except the oink (do deer oink?!). But I don't know where the idea of all this bruising comes from. The only times I have seen much of it was from road kills.

The idea behind Nosler Partitions is to have the front end come off and literally disintegrate a deer's organs and cause brain damage, which is why deer and other lightweights literally die in their tracks. And when the shot doesn't get placed right there is the back end of the Partition to carry on and do other damage.

My favorite is the .280 with 160 gr. Partitions. When placed correctly it kills deer instantaneously, but it gets a little less certain with elk and bigger game to kill them instantaneously, though they do deadly work on non-tough big stuff like moose.

If zero meat damage is desired, use solids! Of course there may be a couple busted ribs, so I hope no one goes hungry.

If anyone has enough money to own a computer and pay for an internet connection and is worried sick about the slight amount of bruised deer meat from Partitions should sell their damn computer and spend the money on red meat at the grocery store!
