"Both the Express and the Magnum share features normally found only on custom rifles. The barrel and sighting rib are painstakingly machined from a single bar of steel - a luxury detail found only on these Ruger bolt-actions. The solid rib incorporates folding-leaf express sights, ruggedly dependable in their own right or as a practical backup to an optical sighting system. Both rifles are factory-machined to accept Ruger steel scope rings.
The Circassian walnut stock, traditionally contoured and handsomely checkered, is a feature associated with only the best-quality rifles. Timeless beauty, superb refinements, and exceptional features make this rifle hard to duplicate at twice the price!"

This is a repost of info I originally posted back in 2004. The above info and product description are from a 1999 Ruger catalog.

Hope this helps.

I have one in .30-06 too...

shoots 25mm groups of 5 shots, best with Nosler Balistic Tips / or Partitions at 180grs

My best rifle...!!!
Classic & beautifull!

Unfortunally Ruger does not produce it anymore - or has something changed?!

I don’t know. I will have to take a trip to Denmark next week and pick it up. I had to go out of Norway to find one. The rifle I have bought is brand new, and I can’t wait to get it.
I will tell you how it shoots in a few days.

Have you tried 200 and 220 gr. bullets in your Ruger?

If the rifle shoots well, I will bring it to Africa in may-July, and hunt with it, and let my son Joakim hunt and maby shoot his first “big game†ever!

I have two Ruger M77 Mk II rifles in .30-06. (One has had some custom work done on it including a custom walnut stock. Both are blued steel with walnut stocks.) Both rifles shoot 220 gr Hornady and Woodleigh round nose bullets just great. Groups run around 1.0-1.25 inches at 100 yards (and I don't claim to be the best rifle shot around).

My 220 gr Woodleigh RN load is 52.0 grs of IMR-4350, W-W brass, WLR primer, COL 3.15". In one rifle average muzzle velocity runs 2460 fps (750 m/s) and in the other rifle it averages about 2430 fps. Both rifles have 22 inch barrels.

Looking over some of the reloading manuals, it seems it's possible to get a little more velocity with 220 gr bullets in the .30-06 but this load is accurate in both of my rifles so I haven't bothered with trying other loads and powders. And, IMHO, 2400-2500 fps works just fine in the bushveld where shooting distances are usually inside of 200 yards. BTW, according to an article by Ken Waters, 52.0 grs of IMR-4350 was Jack O'Connor's recommended load for 220 gr bullets in the .30-06.

Cheers!

Beautiful pair of Rugers, and a two-gun battery fit for any safari. thumb

Does the Express have a recoil lug on the action (like a Mk II) instead of a detachable recoil plate (like the RSM)?

I started off with a Ruger Roundtop M77 "MkI" in 30-06 in 1978. I still have it. It still shoots bugholes.

Love those Rugers. patriot

I loved these rifles. Wanted one in 06 and then the Mag in 375 but they stopped making the 06. Went with M70's instead. Still love that quarter rib though...

I love the overall look of Rugers, but I'm probably the only one in the world that dislikes the rib rear sight. Seems to spoil the lines with a hump-back effect.

That's as nice of a "matched set" as you could get buying production rifles.
Now all you need is a good case, a scope for each rifle and airfare. salute

Love that pair of Rugers. Unfortunately, Ruger limits their left-hand models. RIP steered me to a MK-II lefty that is now a .395 Max. Like it so well, I'm looking for another used one in a lighter companion caliber. Why used? Because I can then modify it without my cat's concern with spending money that might better be used on catnip (her opinion).

The trigger could be better on the new rifle. Its pretty hard and long. What do you guys do to improve the trigger on theese rifles?
I know that Timney makes ok triggersystems (i got Timney on my RSM) but is there something to be done on the original triggersystem?

Please forgive my "rusty english" Smiler
