I have a pre 64 model 70 with a Leupold 3x9 and it is a great rifle. Have two old model 70's one from 1957 & the other 1959, the other is a .270. They are both great rifles and show the pride winchester put into guns in those days.

Right you are, Ray.

My gal says I'm a prevert. Does that count?

Kward, I have the same combination except my Model 70 .270 is a '56 vintage rifle. Pretty good combo if you ask me.

Fisher,
I think you inverted, reverted or converted

That should be 3" high at 100, 4" high at 200, on at 275 or so...but all guns are different so its possible yours will shoot that way, just not likely.

I've always liked 7mm's, so I figured I'd never have a lot of use for a .30 cal. Besides, EVERYBODY has a 30-06 or a 308, and I decided I'm not everybody.

But, last year I had an opportunity to get a Rem. 721 .300 H&H in near mint condition for a great price. I picked it up, and took it for my moose and deer hunts. Only had time to sight it in with factory loads. Got my moose and a 10 point buck with it, and fell in love with the cartridge. No more recoil than my .280, and just a sweet, sweet cartridge.

A couple of months ago, my buddy decided to part with one of his pre-64 Mod. 70's in .300 H&H. He gave me a good deal, too (though a lot more than he paid for it), so I grabbed it. Haven't killed anything with it, but I think it has the distinct potential to be my "go-to" gun. The gun shoots great with 180 gr. bullets and 66 gr. IMR4350. Not a hot load by any means, but this rifle doesn't need it. With it sighted in 4" high at 100, it's 3" high at 200 and dead on at 300. What more could anyone want??

That means the 721 is on the block, to clear some room in the gun-safe.

I picked up a '52 M70 in 300 H&H at the end of last year. Fantastic rifle/cartridge combo.

Buster,
My first 300 H&H was a Remington 721. I restocked it with a 700 classic stock. It shot extremely well but the bolt handle was unfortnately placed on the wrong side of the gun. I sold it and replaced it with a Remington 700 KS LH mountain rifle in 300 H&H. Before anyone jumps on me claiming they don't catalog the KS in 300 H&H, let me say that I managed to talk the custom shop into the chambering. They were very accomadating. While I am no great fan of synthetic stocks, I bought this one several years ago in my more experimental days. I love the rifle. It is the only synthetic stocked rifle I own. I shoot 200 grain Grand Slams over 69 grains of H4831 for everything. I really don't see how it gives up anything to the other 300's in the field. Any difference in the 300 magnums is purely acedemic. Good luck and enjoy that fine old rifle. I really think you have one the finest mule deer and elk rifles in existence. Mart
