The barreled action is with Toomany Tools and I'll test it again when it's blued and returned.

I fired five shots to confirm only that something wasn't inordinately wrong.....and they made a favorable group.

I also find that many barrels don't produce their best until 200 rounds have been driven through them.....I have also done no experimentation of loads.....only the ones I was given a few months ago.

Performance should be similar to the 6.5 X 55 or possibly a bit more.....and it'll make a superb deer slayer!

In fact, it appears a BIG OL Termite chewed it's way through the Grip area. shocker rotflmo

A N D..., somebody musta Klutzed it onto the floor and WHAMMED up the Tip of the forearm really bad. Looks like the Tip has been "chopped" off and a piecea Loblolly or Slash Pine stuck on.

Did the Grip area set in a puddle of "oil" on the floor to get that greasy dark colored circle on the enda it? hilbily

Soak it in some gasoline and it "might" get that oil out. If not, it will help it when you toss it in the Burn Barrel!!! animal

The checkering of the thumb hole stock is nice. I could see where checkering that kind of stock, and have it come out looking as nice as it did would require some thought.

The checkering was done by Carol at Ahlman's in Morristown Minnesota.

She has done most of my stocks

I have noticed that there are getting to be several women in the field of checkering, and in Europe several are master engravers. I think that is a good trend. Your gal in Mn. did a very nice job.

+1 for Carol at Ahlman's!

She did a rush job for me several years ago on a Ruger 10/22 laminated mannlicher, the Wal-Mart specials, that I bought my wife for Christmas. Carol received the stock on the monday after Thanksgiving and had it back to me the monday before Christmas. I send all of my checkering work to her. Great quality and great prices, a combination that can't be beat!

Seriously, the 6.5 is a great caliber and will serve you well! Ya gotta get away from those 120's though and go to the 140's...

This 6.5 is actually quite close to the .260 Remington in size of case but the barrel is quite deeply throated to allow for the 140s to be shallow seated and this is where the case capacity starts to improve.

The long action is required for that and time will tell how Roger gets it to shoot and what velocity he can muster. He's an experienced wildcatter and has confidence that this is superior to such gimmicks as "Ackley Improved"

Toomany Tools did the bluing and barrel engraving and installed a two position safety that works great!

At a minimum, this gun will be a fine deer rifle and elk within it's range!

Maybe in my .264......but I still see the 6.5 as a deer rifle supreme.......and for me the 120s are dynamite!

VD's the man.I'll post the performance after making some brass and seriously testing. The thumphole was not my first choice but was something from the past that stirred a lot of nostalgia.A friend of mine ,when we lived in Grand Junction had only shot a rifle in the service. Upon a little ergeing he had Elmer Spurger build a .243 left handed thumb hole on a Mauser action. He zeroed it in and than the next day drove up to the Glade Park area and shot a western four point mule deer. He shortly after died of brain cancer. One shot, one trophy deer and that was it. tu2 Way to go ,Bob. tu2roger

popcornThe appearance of the rifle is totally acceptable. The stock is a keeper. The LOP is great. In about three weeks I'll let you know how it shoots. I forgot to look at the engraving as the feel and balance held my attention. When I put the bolt in the sear caught on the stock and wouldn't close. We rotated the rear of the bolt slightly and it went in. I also noticed that the bolt closes a little hard. With use I suspect it will loosen some. We measured the trigger pull to be about 4 1/3 #. I suspect, however, there is room for adjustment. So far I'd say it was a project well done. I've turned the necks on 40 more .308 cases and made some cases from .243 brass . It appears that the .243 brass will not need neck turning, If it does that can be done also. Enjoy your new McGowen barrel. fishingroger
