...I don't. LoL!

I acquired some 174 grn .311 Sierra MKs so I thought I would try to see how accurate I could get them to shoot in my sporterized 1932 Russian Mosin Nagant and couldn't be happier.

1st test was with Varget.

lower right group is best but is only estimated at 2486 fps and you can see an increase of .4 grains opens the group way up and then is settles back down @ 46 plus grains with an estimated velocity of 2613 at 46.2 grains.

2nd test was with H4350

Again upper charge weights were best. I am settling on 54.2 grains of H4350 for an estimated 2724 fps.

I have found six different loads for this rifle that are sub moa Smiler

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

I don't need a Tikka nor any Mosin, but I'd not turn down a rifle shooting that well.

BTW Mike, Ted said we should talk.

How long have you had that rifle sling?

I have one just like it that I got in the 70's.

True, except this Mosin was made in Russia in 1932.

Alf,

My experience is very different than yours.

In the last 20 years, I have purchased new the following center-fire bolt action rifles.

3 Remingtons
1 Winchester
2 Rugers
4 Brownings
2 Savages
1 Kimber

across 6.5x55, 7x57, 308 win, 30-06, 300 WSM, 375HH.

Except for the Kimber, all were 1 1/4 inch guns or better (some sub moa) with factory ammo and all but 1 sub moa with handloads (My Browning BLR was 1.125 with handloads and 1.25 with factory but that was before I knew how to do load development).

The Winchester 375HH, two browning BLRs in 30-06 were 2/3 inch, All the remingtons were 3/4 inch or better as were the savages with handloads.

The Kimber was a little different. 1.5 inches with factory hunting ammo and about 3/4 of an inch with Fed Nat'l Match target ammo. Best hunting handloads were 1 1/2 also until I completely floated the barrel and then added a pressure bad then it shot sub moa.

I actually believe that in modern factory rifles (excluding Kimber) that if after using 3 or 4 brands of factory ammo the gun isn't shooting 1 of them into 1.5 inches or handloads (using load development techniques) into an inch that is much more likely shooter error than the rifle.

As a firearms instructor, I won a quite a number of beers by showing insistent students it was not their gun but their shooting that was the problem.

I emphasize load development must be performed. I recall your 338 win mag. A random load (your comment) at the bottom end of the scale shot about an 1 1/8 5 shot group with a 5x power scope. Using proper load devlopment and a 8-9 power scope I would be surprised if that gun did not shoot in the .8s.

Browning BLR with Barnes 168 Barnes TSX

with Berger 175 VLD Hunting

Savage 308 Factory Federal 150 copper

with Fed Nat'l Match

"Why is it that a modern Ruger or Winchester or Remington out the box cannot come close to this rifle ?"

Price you cant expect a 600$ rifle to have the quality of a (estimated) 3000$ rifle.

In 1970 Swedish MOD bought HK G3/ CG ak4 for 430$/4000sek each the replacement probably going to cost 2500-3000$ each(Probably not the same quality). In 1970 a Volvo Amason costed 13000sek now a Volvo s60 cost 260000sek. Most 50 years old G3/ak4 still shoots 1,5 moa.

I slightly disagree with P Dog.

I would say the vast majority do.

I don't know whether certain people have a string of bad luck or they choose not to invest the time in developing handloads or the money to buy various brands and bullet weights of ammunition.

But as I mentioned above, in 13 new factory rifles over 20 years, I have had one that was frustrating and that was because I had to do some work to get it to shoot sub MOA with handloads.

I am perplexed by the number of folks who will on the one hand readily admit that every rifle is a "law unto itself" but
are annoyed that throwing a random brand and bullet weight of factory ammo or handloads into a new rifle doesn't produce an MOA group.
