not sure where to place this. talking to a buddy last night who was out shooting. said his shoulder hurts from the gun. I asked him some questions and he said where it hurts. Best way to describe it is if you take your right arm and hold the elbow up to make a rough 90 degree angle it sounds like it's on the deltoid muscle or front portion of the shoulder where you can feel bone.

Could one of you more knowledgeable shooters out there offer an opinion? is the LOP too long? Doesn't sound like he's getting the rifle into the shoulder pocket?

Thanks.

I'm not a credible medical advisor but I have a bone spur in my shooting shoulder in that area and cannot shoot with my elbow elevated past 45 degrees or it digs in. As long as I hold the gun well I can shoot anything up to my 550 Magnum.

If he presses on the top of the shoulder joint and feels pain he may have injured his bursa sack and is suffering from bursitis. Good news is that it typically heals and the pain goes away with time. Just limit activity that causes pain.

This could be anything from just some bruising to rotator cuff tear.

Before trying to decide what gun modifications to make, you need to know what the problem is.

If it is just bruising, then you need to check his technique before deciding. Trying to suggest gun modifications based on “it hurts afterwards” isn’t going to work.

I suggested if it remains sore and does not heal by next week he should see his doctor.

I would go see a physio right now. He would be able to advise it he can sort it out of if a doctor is required.

Any joint is tricky. Any muscle issue can be resolved easily and bones can be set but tendons / ligaments are the hardest to resolve.

Yes. Cut to the chase so he knows what the problem is: he should see an orthopedic surgeon, one who is very experienced with shoulder issues.

Calcific tendonitis of a rotator cuff muscle? Partial muscle tear? Bone spur? Bursitis? Tendonitis of long head biceps? Osteoarthritis? Other?

No mention of what caliber of gun, weight of gun, etc...that makes a world of difference, I have some guns or had some guns that would cripple a silver back gorilla or truck driver..and it would take a week or two to get back to snuff...My roping habit hasn't helped a lot btw..I also have chronic bursitis in neck and shoulders from just such tom foolery. I just go get a shot and its good for up to a year for me as a rule..The shots don't work on everyone, but they sure do on me.
