While not a true test of my rifles ability but after three years of failure to find shootable elk within my comfortable range got the best of me. I took my little .338 out on a pronghorn doe hunt this last weekend. I was able to put a 200 grain Hornady SP through both lungs of a doe at 217 yards. She did manage to run about 50-75 yards before piling up. I always knew the rifle could shoot but I had bought it primarily as a elk hunting rifle and maybe a moose gun some day. I'll post some pics when I get back to my computer at home tonight of my doe and rifle.

And now for the Pics!

Well done! It's always frustrating when you don't get to bloody a hunting rig. I love my 338-06, deer to elk & what ever. I have used mine to shoot a tiny Duiker, works fine for the little guys too.

the .338-06 might be a tad much for the pronghorns.....but it sure does put meat in the freezer.....
Here's hoping you find a nice 6 X 6 next outing! beer

I agree, but it sure was fun to get to shoot that rifle from other than the bench for a change. dancing

I had been looking to build a .338-06 when I found this one in a local gunstore. It is a 1903 Springfield with 24" fluted barrel and I topped it off with 2.5-8X36 VXIII. The only thing I will change on this rifle is the safety. I'm going to go to a M70 style swing safety as the Buhler style I have is too close to my scope. I'm getting nearly 2900 fps out of the Hornady's with out getting near max powder using RL-15.

Oh my GOD!!!! You cleanly killed a game animal with a CONVENTIONAL cup and core slug that cost all of maybe ....TWENTY cents!! And driven WELL UNDER 3200 fps too!

And with a ctg devoid of the term ULTRA or MAGNUM in the headstamp!!

How could this have happened??

Maybe an intelligent, shootable ctg that uses under a hundred grains of powder....employing a heavy for caliber slug at a MODERATE velocity simply....WORKS!!
Who'd a thunk it??

Hunting season begins here in two weeks. I have a 200 yd range with bench set up behind my garage. MANY of my neighbors come over to check ZERO each year. "Check Zero" REALLY means; Frank cleans the bore of my gun, checks and generally tightens scopes, realigns scope so it's square, then sights IN my rifle as I'm AFRAID of it".

Suffered through TWO .338 Ultra Mags this past week. BOTH owners are absolutely terrified of shooting them.

Hence the condescending Ultra Mag post.

Congrats on the antelope doe! Never used mine for antelope but it sure does a great job on elk and moose! Wink

Kudos on the 'Lope kill.
I've always thought that the 338-06 is about as good as it gets for Elk and Moose. Not great recoil, and a real good killer. I'd take it over a 338 Win any day. 338 Win's kick too much for me.. Big Grin

I know the area! We hunted more over towards Sugarland, but I didn't make it out this year and my 2 hutnin buddies said that ranch will no longer be hunted. He got some vouchers and is now charging 500$ a head to get on the property. I love that land out there, made a 300 yard belly crawl stalk my first year. Since you know the land well too, you know how much of a bitch that was lmao
