A hunting buddy of mine just purchased a Win. model 70 XTR in 7x57. I am not familiar with this model. Anyone have any info on the XTR model? The stock looks very similar to the Featherweight

It's basically the same as the Classic line available today, but they're push-feed, rather than the current CRF offerings. Good rifles, if the price is right. In my opinion, it's a much better push-feed design than Remington.

The post-1963 push-feed Model 70s have been given a rather bum rap over the years that they don't deserve. I prefer them to the Model 700 myself, and I have had excellent luck with most of the PF M-70s I've owned.

The early ones were rough, but they got a lot better in 1968 when the anti-bind feature was introduced, better still in terms of finish when the XTR program was introduced in the late 1970s, and even better when Winchester finally went back to the original, pre-1964 style bolt sleeve and cocking piece around 1981.

Thanks for the responses. I thought that he probably had a pretty good deal on his hands. I think he paid $550 with shipping.

I got one of those in 7 x 57. You have a smith adjust the trigger, and glass bed it. Load 140 gr Nosler Partitions and go hunting. I bought it back around 1981 or 82. When they started making the Feather Weight again. Yea its a Push feed, its still a good rifle. I shot a lot of deer on a crop damage permit with it.
