I try to be like the guy that had the best set up. You know how women only wear something once?
He tried to turn that thought process to his advantage. He told his wife it was not safe to hunt with a used rifle because it might be worn and break. So he went hunting with a new rifle every year.

Deer are easy to kill so I am pretty promiscuous with what I use. I am not a fan of 6mms but I might use one if I have a new varmint rifle to check out. In general I hunt deer with anything larger than a 6mm meaning it starts with a 250 Savage. I have a 6.5X55 Swede that I need to try out along with a 6.5X53R Dutch Mannlicher. I have shot deer with the 45-70 on the top end and would like to try a 50-70 also.
In general for deer hunting I consider the 7X57 ideal.

For elk I would use 8x57 to .375 H&H just because I have them. The 9X57 would be my preferred round.

The Roberts then followed closely behind; 35 whelen

300 H&H, 180 partitions deer, antelope or 200 partitions, everything else.

Anything on NA, most of the rest of the world.

For elk my 340 Weatherby

For deer my 30/06

or 300 Win for both

7mm-08 for deer and .338 WM for the big stuff.

I think the perfect Elk cartridge is a 8mm Remington Mag, followed by a 8x68s, 325 WSM, and 340 Weatherby. I don't have any of them

When I started hunting many, many years ago, I was living in the heart of some of Colorado's best elk country, Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Back then the answer to this question would have been simple: my .30-06. That was the only centerfire rifle that I had. And for about 10 years I shot my deer and elk every year with that .30-06.

A few years after I moved to Montana a friend gave me a .30 Gibbs case and I decided I just had to have a .30 Gibbs. Then that became my elk rifle and I needed a deer/antelope rifle so I built a .257 Ackley. So for the next 20 some years when I went elk hunting, and a couple of moose hunts, I took my .30 Gibbs. And when I went deer or antelope, and several bighorn sheep hunts, I took my .257 AI.

So after many years of hunting elk, deer, and a whole lot of other creatures, the rifle that I would pull from my safe for a specific hunt would be:

For Elk:
.300 Weatherby
7 mm Rem mag (Stainless/plastic stock for rainy weather)
.270 Win
.257 AI

For Deer:
.257 AI
7 mm Rem mag (Stainless/plastic stock for rainy weather)
.270 Win
.22-250

For overseas hunts:
Dangerous game: .375 RUM
All other game: .300 Weatherby

For Deer:

M700 8x57


For elk:

M70 8x57


or is it the other way around. I forget.

Deer and such 270 Winchester, with a 130 Grain Bullet@3100fps

Elk Moose 35 Whelen 225 Grain Bullet @ 2750fps

Dangerous Game 375 H&H 270/300 grain bullet@ 2600fps.

for years our deer and elk season overlapped by a week.
so I went all radical and still used the 7 Ackley with 139 gr hornady interlocks,
stomping out the barrel at 2850 fps.

last year it was the 30-30 with cast boolits.
I somehow ended up shooting my deer with a 257 Roberts and the elk with the lowly cast bullet at twice the distance the deer was shot with the high powered rifle.

I don't really get all worked up about the rifle I use, i'm more concerned with actually seeing a deer or an elk to shoot.

1. 9.3x62 Mauser - 250 grain for deer, 286 grain for elk
2. 358 Win. - 200 gr for deer, 225 gr for elk
3. 300 Win Mag - 180 gr for everything

A 270 and a 9.3x62

for me my 8mm mauser shooting 150s for deer and 200s for elk. Or my 30-30 for deer maybe elk.

Antelope/Deer: 25.06. or. 280 Rem.

Elk/Moose: 338WM. or. 35 Whelen

For stalking, still hunting (according to game size and distance ) : 7x64, .30-06, .300 Win Mag.

For drive hunting : 9,3x74R, 9,3x62.

6.5 Creedmoor, .270 Win, 7X57, .30-'06 for deer. If I ever get to hunt Elk I'll consider the same calibers with the heaviest bullets I can find for shots up to about 250 yards which probably will end up being an '06 or a 7X57 since the 6.5 and .277 bullets might be hard to find in the preferred 175 grain or better range. For anticipated shots over 250 yards for elk I'd have an excuse to buy a medium bore magnum.

Vanguard in .257 Wby w/ .115 grn Partitions for deer.

Somehow a .338 Win. Mag. and a 30-06 always seem to be in the mix.

For me, the .300 H&H does everything I need in NA. I use to prefer the 200 gr. nosler style bullets, but I now use the Barnes TTSX 180gr exclusively in my custom Mauser 98.

I have to agree with André....I would use;

Just wondering why the 8mm Mauser is fit for Moose but, but not for Elk? Long shots.... ???
