I'd like an opinion or a dozen on the remington 710. I'm looking for an inexpensive back up hunting rifle. I know my sporterized 6.5x55 is always up to the task, but I wanted something in a standard caliber that I could, heaven forbid, find and shoot factory ammo for should the need arrise. I've read writers reviews, now I want real opinions. I'm thinking 30-06 for all around utility, unless someone can convince me otherwise. Thanks for your time.

I have never handled a Rem 710 but I can't see why it would not shoot any better or worse than other factory rifles...that is, when shot as it comes from the box.

The big negative for me would be that the Rem 710 can't be rebarreled by your gunsmith. The locking lug recesses are in the barrel itself.

If I wanted a cheap backup rifle as a "just to have gun" at throw away prices I would much prefer a used rifle on Rem 700, M70 etc.

I'd be looking for an old Mauser sporter with a good bore. They're everywhere and can usually be had at a resonable price.

Take a look at the Savage rifles as they are VERY accurate!!!!!!!!!

I have talked to two people who own a Remington 710. They are quit happy with them. They wanted an inexpensive hunting rifle that was accurate and reliable and could keep in the truck. They do not do a lot of target shooting, nor do they ever plan on changing the barrels. From what they told me, the rifles are very accurate.

They didn't feel very good to me down at the local Walmart. They also had the Weatherby Vanguard for $388 in calibers from 270-300 Weatherby Mag (thats what I've decided to hide in the garage for a couple of months). I noticed at Bass Pro the other day they had some model of Winchester Model 70 for $299, I think the Vanguard (Howa action) would be a much better by, didn't get a chance to handle the cheap Winchester so can't comment on it.
