I'm looking for a set-up for my girlfriend's 7mm/08 for Alaska Caribou and NZ Tahr.

Has anyone loaded the 140 gr North Forks in a 7/08?

Any other pet loads for the 7/08?

I have not loaded the NF, but I got friends who had excellent results with ordinary nosler partitions on this type of animals. If you got a short action there can be trouble with the longer bullets, some must be seated very deep in the case which causes pressure problems.

Woodleigh PP is also a nice bullet.

Cheers

TT, the NF loads very sim. to the Barnes. I had good results w/ W760 & RL15 under the 140gr. I sold my little Sako though so I never got to laoding the 'X' or NF. Like Johan said, nothing wrong w/ 150grNP in the 7-08 for Carabou. Tahr aren't really that big so 140gr will do there as well. A fare chase Tahr hunt is one a$$ kicking (better be in shape), satisfying hunt.

I certainly like the NPs, but the rifle has been pretty inaccurate thus far with factory loads, and fouls very badly. I would like to try the NFs for their renouned accuracy and reputation for not fouling barrels.

I will certainly try the NPs if the NFs don't do well.

Thanks for the replies.

Northforks could be described as an improved Nosler, albiet they do not have the penitration of a Nosler, nothing but a solid and perhaps a pure monolithic can penitrate like a Nosler, but at any rate, how could it get any better than that? I have use them on most African plainsgame and on Cape Buffalo with perfect results..I know several that have used the 140 gr. 7 mm on Antelope and mule deer with the same results that I have had....You can't go wrong, they will never fail you...

fredj338, it sounds like I could get a Barnes manual and use data for the TSX to get starting loads for the North Forks?

Or, they are similar in construction to Failsafes, so maybe I could use that data, although the NFs will likely produce lower pressure/velocity, all else equal.

Does anyone know what the "go to" powders are for a 7/08? Varget, R15?

I've use W760 in my 7-08 for many years and have been satisfied. I've read of many other powders that have worked well too, H414, RL15, Varget, W-748, IMR and XMR-4064, the 4350's and the list goes on.

I can't give any in put with regard to the NF bullets but, my rifle didn't like Barnes X's nor Nolser Partitions. I load Rem 140gr PSPCL and Speer 145gr, Grand Slams. My rifle is most accurate with Nolser BT's but I'm one of those that have found them to be to frangible, although I've heard they have since thickened the jacket.

Try 4320imr, 39.5 grains and 140 grain nbt. works well in my guns and bt's will kill caribou no problem. They are not to tough. Never hunted Tahr, but same load with partitions should work well.

Hey TT,

I carry one of those "girly guns". I use 41.5 grs. of RL-15 for the 140 gr. Partitions in my 7mm-08. It is not as temperature sensitive and shoots sub-MOA for me. I am using Win. brass and WLR primers.

I am going to order the TSX's and try them this season.

A girlfriend that hunts......one can dream!!

Good Hunting,

Bob
