With the Model 70 discontinued in this caliber, what have folks' experiences been with the Ruger 77s? Accuracy in particular, any difference between blued and stainless?

Mines an early one but with the right receipt will under an inch, which is pretty good for a light weight wimpy barrel hunting rifle.

I have Ruger 77 MKII's. A 257 Roberts in the plain basic model. A 308 and a 270 in the laminated with stainless. A 223 and a 243 in the VT model. The 308 & 270 were shooters right out of the box grouping 3/4" with plain Remington Cor-Lokts. The 257 needed a little work with reloading to get it to group under 1/2". The triggers on the standard Ruger's do need a little work to get them to 3#'s. It is not a major thing to do and any good smith should be able to do that or get a replacement trigger. The VT models have adjustable triggers to start with and they shot 1/2" out of the box. I have not had a chance to really work with the 223, 243, 308 and 270 with reloading to get better groups. I have a 1988 model 70 XTR 7MM RM that I really like. For the money the Ruger is a good buy and even comes with 1" rings. My basic Ruger cost me $485. and the lam-stainless were $510.. Hope that this helps and enjoy.

Just got one for x-mas,had to buy it myself though. It was a rem BDL stainless w/composite stock. So far shot it 8 rds.3 to zero at 100 yds, next five holes touching making one big hole.I have other rifles in differt cals from Ruger, all shoot great after doing triger work, don't see why the 280 won't do just as good.

I have a stainless Ruger but I took the ugly plastic stock off and had it restocked with a nice piece of English walnut. The rifle will consistantly shoot under an inch with my handloads.

Just got my NO.1 (280) back after having the forearm bedded and a Keplinger trigger installed. Managed to get out the last days of deer season and get a nice doe. It hit where I aimed. Keplinger trigger is great. Have not shot for small groups. Hornady Light Magnums fired during zero were under an inch but did not try much variety and I have a fixed 6X with a post so can't take a fine bead.

Its is THE GUN in the fields. I had a big window on it but kicked back to a 4x and love it. It does not look the same but shoots great.
Turtle [Cool]
BTW not Blued or Crome or silver. Just flat ugly and flat on. [Big Grin]

Ever notice how Ruger is the only gun manufacturer who doesn't keep discontinuing calibers? You can still get a 6mm Rem, 280, and 7x57. Remington doesn't even have the 6mm Rem in the BDL and it is a Remington caliber! [Confused] I plan on getting a Ruger as my next rifle. Now, if we can get them to improve their triggers.

I have an older tang safety M77 in 280. It is one rifle I don't plan on ever getting rid of. I've hunted and shot it quite a bit and have never found it to be wanting. It'll shoot almost anything I feed it into a 1.25 group and will place my selected hand loads into less than an inch. That rifle just seems to fit me perfect and I "know" the trigger. I do prefer the tang safety models to the new 3 position style though. Plus the triggers can be adjusted on the older models.
