I am looking for a Remington Classic in either .300 win or .300 Weatherby. What is a fair price on these? I have found a .300 win that is new in the box for $550 and missed out on a Weatherby last week that had a Leupold Vari-x II for $600. Just want to make sure on prices before I decide on one.
I am primarily going to be using this gun for elk and I will be handloading for it. What are the pros and cons of either caliber? I was leaning towards the weatherby because of the increased velocity but is it really going to make that much diference between the two for elk? Probably will be using 180 or 200 grain bullets . Thanks for the info.

Both of those prices are "in the ballpark" of what I've seen Classics offered for.

With the 24 inch barrel on the Classic, I doubt there is going to be a whole lot of difference between the two as far as velocity goes.

The ammunition for the Weatherby will be more expensive than for the Winchester. There are more choices for the 300 Win also.

Basically, it comes down to which you want. There aren't any wrong choices here.

Joe.

I don't care for the Weatherby radiused shoulder, and I've never had good luck with the freebored leade on the Weatherby in regard to accuracy. Velocities, at similar pressures, will be within 100 fps, which is less than the shot-to-shot variation with some of the poorer factory loads in some calibers.

Thanks for the info, I am leaning towards the .300 win. Just need to find one. The one I thought I had located turned out to be a BDL Custom Deluxe. I love the lines of the Classics,So I will keep looking. Might try and find one in .280 also. I have a .280 in the Mountain rifle. Great shooting little gun but would like it better with a 24" barrel.

My question now is should I just buy the BDL Custom Deluxe and refinish the stock. Because I hate those high gloss varnish finishes or keep looking for a classic? My preference would be to wait but I am antsy to buy a new gun right now. [Smile]

One of the biggest mistake I made was letting a friend talk me out of my rem classic 300wby. It was a good shooter alot better than my classic 300 win mag. From what I've seen the classic in the 300H&H were pretty good rifles. I rebarrel the 300 win mag to a 30-338. Well good luck. Tom

Oakie, thnks for the link. I am keeping an eye on a couple on there now.

Tom, Now you are starting to confuse me [Smile] I have heard just the oposite from many people. That the weatherbys dont shoot as well in the Classic as the Win. I would like to hear a few more opinions on this. I have located a couple of each and need to make up my mind on which one [Smile]

Fire-Dog: I was at a gun shop in LaGrande,Oregon and he had several Remington Classics that he got from a local that was getting rid of his collection. I know that he had a 300 Weatherby and a 7 Weatherby. Both were new.I think he had the boxes!!! I bought a 222 Classic from him that was new. Shot it today as I am getting ready for our local B.S. shoot. It shoots great. After break in the first 5 went into .248 the second 5 .368. I was very pleased. Hope I can do as well at the shoot. Let me know if you are still interested and I will get the shops phone ## He also had a 220 Swift/ 6.5x55/7x57 all Classics.Ter

Thanks everyone else for the opinions and ideas. Looking forward to shooting this one now [Smile]

Oleman, That sounds great, if I can get around 300 with 200 grain bullets I will be happy [Smile] I was just on Midways sight trying to figure out which Dies I need to get and anything else such as new shellholder for press and primer tools and any other new toys I need for working with the .300. God I love buying new guns [Smile]

Well I got my gun finally and I have to say it is in great shape. I have to thank Ter again for letting me know about the shop over in La Grande, The Oregon Trail Trader. Gun is basically brand new Classic in .300 Weatherby, was told it had about 100 round through it. For only $450. Perfect condition. It has also had trigger work done and it is glass bedded. I m really looking forward to shooting it,just need to get a scope on it and get some loads done up and go do a little shooting.
