I like this gun, but at 7.5 pounds it is 1 pound better than a Remington model 7 CDL in 7-08. With a scope it is an 8 pound hunter! Would the attributes (accuracy) of this gun persuade one to buy it over a Model 7 in the same caliber? I was looking at a BLR but the stock looks like it is set up for iron sights more so than a scope.

How about a tikka lightweight?? I have rem 700 bolt action....great shooter. I have a tikka whitetail....great shooter. I have a Blr...good shooter. If I was looking for a great value with super smooth bolt and great reputation for accuracy at a wonderful price I would be looking hard at the tikka's.

The Tika may be the ticket! Can you get a 4 round magazine for it? I would like a 20 inch barrel for the intended application = thickets and less than 100 yard shots.

Check out a Kimber 84M at 5 1/4 lbs. The barrel is longer but it's a lot cheaper to shorten a barrel than to lengthen one...........DJ

Did you check the REM Titanium? I got a 7mm08 varmint back in 1982 and cut it to 20" and it has been my deer slayer ever since. Just put a HS precision stock on it and with the scope it is 8.5 lb.

Good luck with the choices.

IMO, the Steyr will be a real shooter. I have one and am very pleased. Have never heard of a Steyr that would not shoot.

It is a 30-06 and I bought it to replace a lightweight Sauer 30-06 that I had a helluva time getting to shoot within 1" and it was still not 100% consistant.

I'll carry an extra pound in order to be able to hit exactly where I want.

If your heart is really set on a Steyr and want lightweight you should check out a Scout rifle. I think that they are coming back available in the US and maybe in calibers other than 308. They shoot extremely well even with the short fluted barrel. Ain't cheap though..............DJ

I had a styer in .308.
Nothing wrong with the way it performed, but I hated the synthetick stock.
A wood one might be great though.
Nothing wrong with a 7mm08 CDL , of corse the Kimber woulld be wonderfull,
But I thnik I would By the mdl 7 cdl and add the xtra 250.00 to what ever you were gonna spend on a scope.
A VX3 2.5x8 or 1.75X6 on a model 7, prety darn good combo. But if you got the money get the Kimber and thew leupy...tj3006

I have owned both types of rifles and my vote would be for the Steyr. The ones I have owned have been super accurate with a wide variety of bullet weights and brands. Functional reliablity has been perfect in the ones I have owned (they feed very, very smoothly). The Model Sevens that I have owned were very accurate but not with as many different types of loads as the Steyrs were. I also had some occasional feeding and extraction problems involving factory ammo with the Model Seven. In my opinion Steyrs are definately worth the extra pound. This is just my experience however, and others may have had just the opposite type of experience - but I don't think you would be disappointed with the Steyr.

I picked up the pieces of a 7mm-08 700 Titanium that was torn down for the action. I re-assembled the rifle using a 700 SA I had on hand and the rifle with a 2.5-8X Leupold weighs in at 6.75 lbs.

The Steyr scout is light, but looks a bit odd. It looks like a scope could be mounted in the rear, I am checking to see if it can be purchased in 7-08, it is quite a bit more money!

I have rear mounted scopes on all 3 of my Scouts I really don't care for the front mounted scopes. I do really like the scout's extra mag in the butt, 3 point sling mount, reserve sights, storage for cleaning kit etc.. It has a lot of neat features but like you said it is a little expensive. I keep one of them as a truck gun. I leave the rear mag loaded, so when ready to hunt you just switch mags and you are ready to go....................DJ

Don't know if you looked at Tikka's website but here it is.....

http://www.berettausa.com/customer/downloads/tikka.pdf

Just scroll down and check out the new T3 big bore. 19" barrel, 6.1 lb wt, guaranteed to shoot under an 1". Probably can be had for about $590. Only negative is clip capacity is 3 rounds so you have a total of 4----would you really need more in a bolt action?? Also, not avail in 7mm cal's....just 308, '06, 300wsm. Personally I'd go for the wsm.....you can load it down to be like a 308 or '06....or you have the extra power if you every go out west or up north.

5 round mags can be bought for all Tikka T3s except the WSMs. Not cheap though.

Another vote for the Steyr ProHunter. I have one in 260 Rem, and it is a real shooter. I got over the looks of the stock when I saw how it punched paper targets.
