Hi all, I'm thinking of acquiring a CZ 527 in 7.62x39. MY question is, does anyone know what the bore diameter is in the CZ? Is it .308 or more like .311/.312? Just want to know so I can make my final decision. Thanks all. -- Promise me, when I die, don't let my wife sell my guns for what I told I her I paid for them.

As j-a-h noted the bore is .311. In my 527 I use Barnaul ammunition with FMJ bullets for range shooting. When I want an expanding bullet I pull the FMJs and seat Hornady spire point or SST bullets. Both are 123 grain bullets measuring 0.310". Accuracy is decent with FMJ bullets, plenty good enough for plinking or range practice. With the Hornady bullets accuracy is superb. Second the fine accuracy with Hornady bullets. Nice little rifle, handles very well and I didn't find the backward safety that much of a issue. The only issue I had with it was it's limited range, velocity is functionally quite low. I was not impressed with it's killing power at all when the range was over 100 yds, even whitetail does. If all your shots are under 100 yds AND you place your shots carefully it will be OK, but that's about as much praise as I'll give the round. I sold the rifle to some who had a few AK's and wanted to try the cartridge out in a more accurate platform. I replaced it with a 527 in 223, a heavier varmint barrel model and have found it far more useful. I might get another 527 in the small carbine form as the 7.62x39 but in 223 as I really liked the handling charismatics just not the cartridge.

Both HunterMontana and just-a-hunter make good arguments in favor of the .223, and I can't really disagree. At the time I bought my carbine I wanted something capable of firing the 7.62x39 cartridge as there was lots of decent quality surplus ammo available. Nothing against the SKS or AK rifles, I just wanted a light, compact, and accurate bolt rifle. At the time I bought my 527 carbine, the .223 version had a 1-12 twist. I see the current web information indicates the .223 now has a 1-9 twist which allows for a wider range of bullet weights. I have a couple of 1-12 .223s which I'm perfectly happy with, shooting 40 to 55 gr bullets. I think 1-8 or 1-9 is more versatile and am glad to see it in the new CZ carbines, I think it makes them an even better choice.

Certainly the US DoD thought so in the 60's. Thanks to all who replied. I'll probably give it a miss, but I am wondering about the .223 Varmint version with the laminated stock, now, but I suppose that should be in the "Weenie calibre" section. I'm also looking at the American in 17 Hornet AND the carbine in .223 ... Decisions, decisions, it's terrible to be so spoilt for choice. -- Promise me, when I die, don't let my wife sell my guns for what I told I her I paid for them.
