Have a rifle that shoots lights out with the factory plastic uuuuggllllly stock. I am looking at Bell & Carlson or HS Precision on one of the websites.....both are full length aluminum bedding blocks. Any recommendations on which one is better? Should I just not change stocks since the rifle shoots so well? I've just always tolerated the ugly stock. Thanks!

I prefer the HS Precision over the Bell and Carlson, but they both should give you good service. The beauty in a rifle to me is in the accuracy. You didn't say what rifle you have in mind to re-stock. My youngest son has a Savage model 12 in 22/250 with the stainless fluted heavy barrel and the flimsy plastic stock that will shoot .125 MOA and every time he looks at it mentions how much he would like to put a new stock on it. I guess I have to agree with him. LOL Dennis Life member NRA

Paint that ugly stock! You might get a prettier stock but how would you feel if it opened up your group size?

I've used a couple Bell & Carlson stocks on Weatherby Vanguards and after being properly bedded they shot just fine. I'd buy and bed whichever stock you prefer.

Did you have to bed those with full length bedding plates?

No, you do not have to bed the aluminum blocks. You should put a thin bead of bedding compound (usually provided with stock) along the sides of the action near the recoil lug just to keep the action well centered. I have both stocks that you have mentioned and like them both. The B&C is a bit lighter but otherwise there is little practical difference.

I like HS Precision but also like Mc Millan and Manners better. B&C work well enough. I only have one. HS Precision - a friend had one. I have several McMs and one Manners. The Manners is not yet fitted to anything but I like it. What rifle is it?

To me the primery function of a rifle is to shoot accurately. Looking pretty but shooting not so good makes a good ooww- ahh wall hanger. I have used both and the B&C seems less finicky on bolt tension. I have never changed to either of the stocks you mention and had accuracy suffer. I have also had cheap plastic stocks that shot well off a bench, but had so much flex that when adding things like bi-pods and slings and then shooting in field positions accuracy was unacceptable. if you get one and don't like it they are pretty easy to re-sell without taking a huge hit.

That's what I've just dealt with. I have Stevens 200 in .223 which I got cheap. With its cheap stock it was quite accurate off the bench, but with a bipod on it, the stock really does flex. I just went with a Boyds stock ($100 plus shipping). I'd already put a Rifle Basix trigger on it, and with the Boyd's stock it looks great and shoots as accurately as ever even with a bipod.

If you are going to spend your $$ to get away from an ugly stock, why buy another ugly stock? Get some walnut..

I grew weary of sanding, shaping and fitting and went with a couple Boyds stocks. I just dropped a National arms 30-06 Mauser into one of their laminates. It reminds me of the 673 350 Remingtom Magnum look. Time for a little bedding work and we will see how it goes. Not too shabby for $100.00. Leave it as is and paint it if you feel it is ugly. There is no way I'd mess with a rifles foundation that shot that good. BTW....I've painted a fair number past just a few injection molded stocks. ________________________________________________ Maker of The Frankenstud Sling Keeper Proudly made in the USA Acepting all forms of payment

Thanks for all the good advice. Will just hold tight and leave it alone. Townsend Whelen - "The only interesting rifles are accurate rifles." I have an interesting rifle.........
