Despite having a safe full of rifles. I have taken all my game with either a .270 or a .300 Win. So it ain't a bad idea- just don't tell my wife..........

There are two types of people in the world: those that get things done and those who make excuses. There are no others.

I can understand your thinking with the 9.3 and anything else. I could consolidate with my .358 STA and .270 WSM, both Winchester Model 70's. But then I couldn't grab 5 or 6 rifles every thursday-saturday-sunday and shoot for several hours then could I. Good shooting.

So, I just put this notion out there for discussion. What do you think?

Been thinking the same thing, have even sold off a few and few to go. Just going to concentrate on hunting.

bartsche ----- I would shoot the other days but I am still a working stiff, although of retirement age. I have flexable hours in my field of work and am my own boss, except for the better half of course. Good shooting.

I completely understand cutting back on the rifle battery to a minimum, as I am in the proccess of doing the same. Have a few more then I really need.
And if one hunts in the same type of setting for the same type of game; it would be pretty easy to do. I guess the .30-06 would come about as close as possible for one gun battery for most uses as possible. For me it would be my .375 Ruger. Or maybe the .35 Whelen.
But as good as he is, even Tiger Woods uses more then one club for a game of golf.

I was at the store buying a book about an hour ago.

Overheard a conversation about people talking about having to many guns. I had to chuckle when the one said he had a couple he has yet to shoot!!

Sales clerk talked about all his guns, well over 100. The interesting thing is he never shot a single animal last autumn.

A hunting rifle is like a wife, only need one.

Similarily, I remember giving up loading for pistol cartridges, and have only two pistols, and shoot factory ammo only. Feels good, and I have no desire to handload for pistols.

Having a variety of rifles, and handloading for rifles is different somehow, and has endured through the years. The recent hunting trip was accomplished shooting factory loads only, which were very effective and very accurate - simple. At this time, I'm not seriously thinking about quiting handloading, just having fewer rifles.

More and more I have felt the same thing lately. As one gets older it seems like the prudent thing to do is have less and do more.
Next you will be thinking you need to get rid of the house and move into an apartment so that the only thing you have to do when you want to leave for a long period of time is empty the fridge of stuff that will spoil and lock the door on the way out. Smiler

You have partially got the picture Wink

Less stuff = less baggage. My "apartment" thought is along the line of two cabins. One on Chichagof Island in SE Alaska, and another in rural Georgia. The latter may turn out to be really an apartment, maybe in Texas, or maybe Costa Rica, yet to be determined. When I go south for the winter, if there is a frig in the AK cabin, I'll clean it out, unplug it, and prop the door open, winterize the place to avoid freeze damage. Big Grin

Another option is to live on a boat all summer in SE Alaska, and put it ashore for the winter, and have an apartment or cabin somewhere South.

On the same subject, I have noticed that if I were to be limited to just one rifle caliber for all hunting, it would be a large .375 for example. However, if asked what would be the best caliber for someone else, it would certainly not be a .375, but I would suggest a .30-06 or similar.
Splain this one Lucy!

Unfortunately if my employment problem doesn't change real soon I will be forced to drastically thin the herd. I will keep my 1022, 223, 06, and one 12g. that should cover most everything and if it comes down to it I will sell all but my 06. The versatility of the 06 will cover a lot of ground.

I could probably hunt the rest of my life in NA w/ my 280, but that would be so boring. I love my 338-06 too. I could easily get by w/ just those two & they have more game down than my other 5 rifles combined. For now, I won't make the decision. SOme day I will have to.coffee

My one rifle was a 300H&H, my brother shot his first deer with it, I shot my first with it, then it was stolen.

Ever since I've been buying all kinds of crap. I've only shot 3 big game in my life. The last I shot was with an antelope with a stock K31 7.5 swiss. It's the best $250 answer I can give.

That said, my go to gun may be my Remington Enfield 30-06. I just love the 30-06 cartridge. I have tons of 300 H&H ammo, but I don't want a $1500 answer.

I should say, though, I'm kinda starting over because I decided my dad needs a nice rifle, so he'll get my dream gun... either a pre-war Mauser or a Schoenauer.
