New Remington Model 700 CDLs are not chambered for the .280 Remington. Maybe you can find an old CDL chambered for the .280?

But the Model 700 Alaskan Ti does come in a .280 Remington and has a 24 inch barrel. http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/centerfire_r...Alaskan_Ti_specs.asp

Enfield, according to the Remington website, the 280rem is available in this version:

http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/centerfire_r...700_mountain_LSS.asp

and also in a synthetic stocked Alaskan.

These might be a special order in the UK. Call the Sportsman in Devon, they will tell you what is available.

Sorry, I should say the LSS is 22" and the Alaskan is 24".

Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they are not out to get you....

Yes, thank you both. I've looked at the Alaskan but don't like the price, the weird bolt, the stock or that it is in white metal! Other than that it would be fine!

Weatherby Mark V Ultra Lightweight comes chambered in .280 Remington with a 24" barrel. Very nice gun. $360 cheaper than the Alaskan Ti and a quarter pound lighter, too.

I want to say the new Browning X-Bolt is going to be chambered in .280, cheaper then the Weatherby and Rem. Not sure if they still are, but Rem was also chambering the 280 in the LSS light rifle with the laminate stock.

you could always go custom... get a second hand rem700 and rebarrel it with a lilja. good chances itll outshoot anything that comes in a cardboard box from the factory, plus itll be miles cheaper than a titanium!

Seems like a little "self-promotion" would be applicable here.

MileHigh - Browning X-bolt comes in a .280 but is 22 inches, not 24.

The .280 CDL I mentioned is from a couple years ago & is now discontinued, and may have never been cataloged. The other one that comes to mind is/was a special run, limited offering, the 700 LSS .280 100 year anniversary model which was 24", SS, and came w/ the black/gray laminate stock. That one was available in 2007, and is now hard to find. I'm looking for the LSS model, please PM me if anyone knows of a source that still has one in inventory.

In a non magnum without the extra powder to burn, would the extra 2" make much of a difference? I always get conflitcing answers as to velocity loss per inch of barrel

I went through the same thing not too long ago. I also wanted a .280 in a Remington with a 24" barrel. For me the 24" in a 700 carries and feels better than a 22" in a standard weight rifle. I ended up going with a Ruger Hawkeye in SS with a 22" tube feels just right and has been suprisingly accurate with 160 Accubonds and IMR 7828. If you can handle one in your area you might just like it.

Best of luck in your quest

maybe 15 fps or so per inch....more baloney is attached to velocity and barrel length than any other subject.....even Magnums don't truly gain a lot in the extra inches.

Simple physics will tell you all you need to know as the time of very fast bullets is so small in the last inches of the barrel.

There is no way anyone will ever notice the difference between 22" and 24" in the field....

further there is no way anyone will ever notice the difference between 22" and 26" in the field..... stir

Yes, the velocity/length issue is silly IMO. Barrel length matters to me personally because of handling and muzzle blast. YMMV.

Makes no difference to me but it does to LBGuy who asked about the availability of a 24" tube in a .280 Rem.

I normally prefer longer barrels for balance, but that also depends on the measurements and profile of the stock. I believe you would see a slight increase going from 22" to 24", maybe 100fps. Some people might say more than that is possible, but really, 100fps is just splitting hairs.
