Local Wal-Mart has a closeout on guns, they have the Vanguard in 300 Weatherby for $299. Can't decide if I want it or not.

you only go around once in life. if you want it, get it. it will certainly take any La. deer.

Not a bad price, but I have little use for a 300 WeM myself...

I've been killing LA deer with a 7mm rem mag, thought I was already over gunned

It is a nice rifle - I've had one for 4 years. It is my Coues deer rifle. I just threw out the plastic stock and re-stocked it with a nice maple burl stock. If you are not recoil sensitive, you'll like it. Mine has been very acccurate. If I found that special near me, I'd buy it and rebarrel it. Maybe 375 H&H? I was thinking that too!

YES! emphatic yes. i've only owned one vanguard and that's recently and i love it. of all the non-mauser style extractor actions i like this one best. a far, far better action than an m700. what else can you get on the market for that kind of money? nothing that can touch it.

I have no use for a 300wby with a 24" barrel, but for that price I would buy it for the action.

Yes!! I got one for christmas a year ago and after 20 years of hunting with a 6mm remington I finally got a chance to put a bigger hole in something. Buck season I got two bucks with it and guess what? Less meat damage, a nice clean kill, the bullet deposted neatly in the hillside behind the deer. I know a lot of people will say it is an overkill but so what? The gun kills deer nicely with probably less meat damage than most smaller calibers. So why not? Assuming you can shoot it well, that is? John And then there's always that elk or moose trip in the future!! John "I'm smiling because they haven't found the bodies."

Buy it, flip it, make some $.

Jump on it! I paid more than that for my plastic stocked .300 Weatherby Vanguard back in about '98, when they came out in Wal-Mart. I'm very happy with it, it's a fine shooting rifle. "A cheerful heart is good medicine."

Yes you should. I bought the same gun at the same price at Wally-World. It is almost like stealing. Shoots bugholes with my handloads. ZM

If the walmarts in CA could still sell guns and had that special I would buy one, and I already have a 308 norma! I'd buy it and keep it around as a lonaer rifle or give it to a relative/friend that started hunting. Red

See what else they have on clearance. 3 weeks ago I bought a remington model 700 BDL stainless for $300. If you don't want a 300 mag maybe they have something tamer. Walk softly and carry a big bore!

They can. They just don't want to.

I bought the Vanguard! They had a 700 ADL in .243 or .270 for $299, don't need another one of those. The test target shows it barely made the accuracy test at 1.4"
|
One of Us |
I found mine to shoot better than the target that came with it. I worked up some handloads with barnes TSX bullets and got down to about an inch. Even if it doesn't shrink, 1.4" is fine for hunting. Lance Lance Larson Studio lancelarsonstudio.com

Actually they can't .........they're mentally incompetent. The CA rules and regulations for firearms sales require the reading ability of an 8th grader. WalMart's store management teams have consistenetly shown that that is beyond their capabilities. MajorCaliber, you are talking about the plastic stocked Vanguard, right? They later started carrying a Vanguard line with the fancy California stocks, but they used to run about %100 higher than the plastic ones, last time I looked. "A cheerful heart is good medicine."

Yes, it's the cheap plastic stocked Vanguard. The stock fits me fine, it's not free floated, and the trigger is awful, I mean really really bad, got to adjust it.

Sorry, you're right. I forgot about that small issue.

I hope mine will shoot that good. I've never used IMR 7828, but have RL-22, H-4831, AA-4350, AA-3100, MRP, and H-450 in stock, surely one of those will perform in the 300

I can't get the trigger to adjust to a lighter pull, and if I adjust the creep, the safety won't engage. This is the WORST factory trigger I've ever seen, I would much prefer an old Military 2 stage to this! I'm ordering a Timney
|

I think Timney makes a trigger for the Vangard/Howa rifle. That the one I am planning on for mine. Ongoing problem - I never have enuff time for all my little projects. Oh well maybe sometime this winter I'll get it done. I've only been complaining about that damn trigger for 4 years Lance Lance Larson Studio lancelarsonstudio.com

Major Caliber I have shot a 300 weatherby for several years now and have a load developed that is deadly on mule deer, elk, moose.I don't use it all the time but for long distance shooting its super and if you will ever be able to hunt out here some day you will not be undergunned.BTW I used to live in Lafayette and still have family there,my 2 kids were born there and my wifes from New Iberia. Here in Helena we will be having our crayfish festival in march, still love them.I hunted and fished the Atchafalya basin for 17 years.Drop-Shot

Weatherby Vangards are made by howa. Barrels are farmed out to some chinese sewer tube factory. I have yet to hear of a good howa rifle. The actions seem to be ok, made with japanese steel made from U.S. ore then sold back to us at a premium. The stocks are made by the same kids that used to make kathy lee brand clothes. What did you expect for $299? ______________________ Are you gonna pull those pistols or whistle Dixie?

You must be hard of hearing! I've had 2 previous Howa's, a .270 and a 30-06. Both were great shooters, and the 30-06 would do 3/4" 3 shot groups at 200 yds

Not hard of hearing at all. Just voicing my mostly unwanted opinion. Stiring the pot a bit. ______________________ Are you gonna pull those pistols or whistle Dixie?

I wonder if remington makes a 710 in 300 weatherby?
|
One of Us |
No, and why would you consider buying a 710?
|
One of Us |
I base my opinion on the 2 710 Remingtons I've handled and shot only 1,Remington should put a bag over their heads for putting their name on that gun.Nylon sleeves don't need to be in recievers.Just an old mans opinion.Drop-Shot
|

I would not consider buying a remington 710 or a vangard for that matter.

A Vanguard isn't half the rifle a Mauser is, but it is twice the rifle a Remington 700 is

I will agree with that statement

I bought a walmart weatherby vanguard for $250 last year.It rusted like crazy if you touched the bluing and the bolt stop broke before I ever shot it.I swear walmart gets seconds and sells them for cheaper than anyone else.A good piece of wood on a walmart gun is from there pallets that they send to their gun makers.I also bought a crossbow because it was on clearence. The store put out a recall notice only after it had sold all of the crossbows.I think wal, mart is the death of sporting goods.Bass pro shop is just as bad I worked there once and there moto was sell them a piece of shit and they will come back for something better. There would be 75 % of the people that bought tasco scopes, cva muzzleloaders which I called pipebomb of the week, warren and sweat treestands worry and sweat I said and a bunch of redhead junk clothes they sold.I forgot wonderful mossberg shotguns they were gartenteed to jam. They would be buggies full of the same crap in the back.I had a bunch of trouble getting walmart to send my weatherby back in to fix the bolt stop.It would not keep the bolt from coming out.The remington 710 and the remington 597 are also two other pieces of crap. They both had problems.I never would have thought that reminton would ever make any bad 870pumps.they did a good job with the 870 express .There were alot of broken foreends and alot of them jammed.I laughed at guys who were too cheap to buy a good Ruger model 77 and instead bought a crappy winchester that was already rusting.I thought that the weatherby I got would not rust because it was new in the back of the store.Walmart would almost do us a favor to get out of the gun business.I have yet to have any crappy stuff from Cabelas yet.Everything I have bought from there is good.

I quit buying guns for good at walmart. It was the second crappy gun I bought from them.Walmart had the codlock on vanguards for a while. They were able to get them for cheaper than dealers could sell them.If you look at walmarts guns they are pretty crappy. They were alot better when sam walton was in charge.Walmart has put alot of knive companies out of business by getting them to make their knives in china instead of the United States. Its the cheaps crap sell for walmart these days.
