I have a CZ550 FS in the caliber...with Ramshot BIG GAME and a 286 gr A-Frame is it unrealistic to think I can get 2400 fps out of the 20.5" tube? Within safe pressures, of course.

Any input would be greatly appreciated

Looking at QL I would call it a maybe at 56,000 and likely if you go to 60,000

As usual just my $.02

Well, out of my 22 in tube I get 2425fps with 65gr of Big Game, standard primer, not magnum primer, in either Graf or Norma cases. Accuracy is excellent with Nosler Partitions, Woodleighs, Hawks, Normas and the lowly Prvi all in 286gr.or 250gr. With most of the 250's I use 65.5gr. because of the excellent accuracy and the velocity comes in about 2500+ but the point of impact is such that I don't have to fiddle with my scope, which I prefer.

A fellow I know has the short barreled version of the 550 as you have and told me he gets about 2400fps with this same load, so there you go.

Obviously, you will not take anything I say seriously as my 65grs will blow your gun up and kill and/or maim you and all your friends within 100yds if you are foolish enough to pull the trigger. You have been warned! There, the bottom feeders should be happy...

But, this load has worked for me very well both here in Montana on elk and deer (cold weather) as well as a whole lot of stuff in Namibia (rather hot late Sept).

My rifle has a 20" ultra light barrel on a Zastava 98 action. Favorite load is 285 or 286 grain PRVI's or Norma Alaskans either one with 62.5 grains of Ramshot Big Game, Graf brass, CCI or WW large rifle primers, velocity is 2350 fps average.
Very accurate.
I took the loads up to 65 grains of RS Big Game but the accuracy was at 62.5 for my rifle, no pressure or problems at any point in my rifle. For me 2350 fps is fine I don't feel like I'm missing anything by not getting 2400.
I'm pretty sure it will kill something even at 2350 muzzle velocity!
Good luck with yours!

Bradking 1, 60gr of Varget under a 286 Nosler partition got me 2355fps out of my 550FS. I had mine rechambered to a 9.3x64. Now the same bullet goes 2540 over 70gr of VV550. Enjoy your little CZ, i sure love mine. Big Grin

One of the main reasons for the 9.3X62 and other medium bores is to use enough bullet that velocity is of minor importance. The 9.3X62 established its reputation with factory loads going about 2150fps. A conservative load of RL15 gives me 2300fps. with 286gr. Hornadys in my 550FS, and I get almost infinite case life. Gaining another 100fps. would not be worth the trouble or possible wear and tear to the brass.

After spending a few years hot loading my 9.3x62 I decided to go in the other direction. Now I feel like 2200-2400 fps is fine and no disadvantage. My shoulder is happier too.

I shoot a lot of Ramshot Big Game in my CZ 9.3X62. I thought the 65 grain load was a bit too hot so I dropped down to 63 grains with a 286 grain bullet. Seems to work well but I thought that maybe the best load for my 9.3 was with a 250 grain TSX bullet. They penetrate like crazy and can be driven at 2500 fps.

The more I shoot my 9.3 X 62 (and .35 Whelen too) I'm thinking the premium 250s just might be the way to go (A-Frame etc)..... these bullets offer a bit better trajectory.

Bear in mind that cape buffalo is not on the current menu.....I just might look for a heavier slug at the lower velocity there as I expect shots on this game to be well within 200 yards.

As a point of reference - I get right at 2,400 fps with a book max load of IMR-4320 from a 24" barrel.

Vapodog, if you shoot a Whelen, you may want to try the 225 TSXs. Again, you can drive them to 2600 fps and they penetrate like crazy.

Define safe pressures....I can just about guarantee that most of the loads quoted above are well above the CIP maximum loads for the 9,3...max pressure restricted to 48.000PSI

Of course...the CZ is a modern action and to take your loads up to say the same working pressure as a 30-06 (56,000 PSI) is both safe and 'reasonable'.

Bear in mind though that by the time you see or feel any signs of excess pressure you are WELL over the limit! My 9,3 loads with SA powders...showed the barest hint of pressure signs on the CCI primers (needed a magnifying glass to see them) ...when checked showed 62,000PSI) I changed powder Wink

This is what I found on searching this site - 17 pages!

I have been on AR only about a year & I have posted at least 3 or 4 times on loads for this great cartridge.

Varget is a great powder (Australian AR 2208). I stay at 2400 fps for the 285gr projectiles and go to 2550 fps for the 250 gr TSX. The Woodleigh SN 320 gr does 2250 fps. All this in my 24 inch barreled Simson M98. The pre 1912 rifle is as tight as the day it was made & primer re-seating is as new.

I just wish I could find something big enough to shoot with this rifle! I would love to try the Woodleigh 320 gr softs on Cape buffalo.

kk alaska has the load, drop it down a bit and it should go 2400 in a 20 incher. Mine went 2475 fps in a 23.6 CZ with 65 gr Big Game.

The 250gr A frame is an excellent bullet but has a BC akin to a barn door and is about 150fps or so faster.

I shot a moose calf at 100yards with it at a MV of 2,400fps. It only went a couple of steps. I didn't recover the bullet as we did a field gralloch but it was in their somewhere. The calf was quite small which made me think that it wasn't a stem to stern bullet.

I think it's hard to beat the 286gr partition - my rifle seems to want to deliver no more than 2,300fps with sane loads (N140, H4895 and RL15) which is where I've stuck. If I decide to moderate it and cut it to 18" then I will try Bigame.
