Just purchased a 1951 Remington 721 in 300 H&H mag.

Was thinking of loading 200g. triple shocks as an all arounder for African plains game up to eland and assorted North American game.

Anyone care to share any pet loads and or experiences with the 721?

Thanks in advance for all input.

Grafton,
Never reloaded for a 721; however, I have an old M70 in 300HH. It will feed slicker than snot, and is pretty accurate out of the box. It will shoot with industry approved reloads between a 30-06 and a 300 WM.

I'd take a look at 180's rather than 200gr bullets. The advantage in the Barnes bullets is their ability to shoot about one level lighter bullet per caliber weight-ie-a 200lead core equals a 180 triple shock. My experience with 180 patitions is that they will shoot through anything you would shoot with a .308 bore from any angle.

Enjoy your rifle. Realize that it isn't a 300 WM and its case taper will not permit pushing it much beyond recommendations without shortening dramatically you case life. It is what it is, which is great. Kudude

I shot the 180 Noslers for the first 10 or 15 years then switched to the 200 gr. Noslers for the next 20 years..I use a cupfull of old Surplus 4831 that left out of a 150 lb. SS military container but I suspect IMR-4831 will get you pretty close to my load...I also shoot the 180 and 200 gr. Noslers in my 06 these days.

I have used the 300 H&H in Africa, Canada, Alaska, and the USA to name a few, shot all sorts of big game with it..

I like the 200 gr. Nosler, 220 gr. Nolser and the 200 and 220 gr. Woodleighs real well..The Northforks are also great bullets as are the GS Customs monolithics.

67gr of RL-22 produced 2880 for me and superb accuracy. don't have my reloading stuff here but my I've used CCI-250 or Fed 215 primers andwhatever brass is available. I used to use Ww exclusively, but I've switched to RP or Nosler. jorge

Did you take a peek at that lovely .375H&H Holland & Holland Mannlicher-stocked rifle with tang safety while you were there. Wink
Hey, that WR .458 Droplock wasn't bad either. thumb

I`ve owned a 721 in 300 mag for years, I used to shoot it too, when I was younger. It is without a doubt the hardest kicking 30 cal I`ve ever used. I read somewhere that the stock design is wrong for a hard kicker.[which for most folks was a whole new experience in 1950] I got it from a dear friend of my Dad who couldn`t shoot it at all. It`s a beauty though, an ADL, virtually unused.......................

My Rem 721 in .300 H&H was my primary gun on Safari and it worked very well with 200 grain A-Frames.

Imr 4350 was used for the pusher and velocity was about 2,900'/sec......a helluva kudu killer.
