I guess I've been lucky. Besides having triggers lightened I never had a Browning, Cooper, Kimber, Marlin, Remington, Ruger or Winchester that needed any work to function or shoot well. That covers all the guns I've owned. In fact I've never had any quality problem with a gun made on modern tooling by any manufacturer. Does that make me a liar or boring person?

There's a dealer locally, he moves the really high-end stuff. He never says, "It sucks." What he says is, "It's a piece of shit!" (We can talk like this here, eh?)

No matter what it is, "POS" -- short of some $5K custom rig.

I've heard diparaging remarks about a lot of decent stuff. You name it, someone will disparage it.

Having heard this routine, I decided to try to figure out what motivates these people. Mostly they seem to knock down some relatively esteemed brand in order to make themselves look impressive. It's a status thing.

Glocks -- I don't like them, for all sorts of reasons. I don't like the trigger, the balance, I think they're pretty ugly. They don't feel right.

Do they suck? If I were "on duty" in the trenches, with the mud, blood, and crud, with bullets zinging around my head and my very life depending upon what I had in my holster -- Glock would be my first choice. But I don't like them otherwise. I'm not "on duty." *LMAO*

(I have a Glock combat/field knife. I like it, a lot.)

What do I like? Old Mausers, just about any old Mausers. They're nostagic for me, and people using the action for a custom gun tells me a lot.

Not happy with Kimber since they moved out of Oregon to New York City (I'll get a rope!) I'm sure they're fine, but I see a lot of people buying them for status. I think maybe they're over-rated. Last time I checked, a while back several years, Les Baer wouldn't work on Kimbers. The warranty is for two years. Springfield is for LIFE. There ya go.

Smith & Wesson -- That's like saying, "It's a Mercedes." Period.

Baikal seems to turn out some nice stuff at a decent price for a couple US mfg's these days.

I like the Rugers. I have lots of them, have owned and traded lots more. Good customer service. My Security Six rolls up in my hand when I shoot it, but the bullet goes where I point, and the gun is nice. Grips would fix the roll.

Just found a Weatherby Vanguard in a pawn shop. Interstate sale, and the background check got delayed. I get it Friday. Leupold scope. Can't see how I'd miss for $367.

Leupold -- scopes now. In Oregon the Leupold is the "gold standard." There are better, more expensive, but "Leupold" around here is like "your father's Oldsmobile" or the Buick your family doctor drove when he made house calls.

Tall, chestnut, willowy with a sense of humor, younger -- but that's a different sort of suck, eh?

What's the determining factor of a rifle sucking? I have a fairly cheap savage that I've got to 1moa with reloads. It's totally stock. I have an expensive Remington that isn't even close to 1 moa. But it's not the rifle. I just haven't learned its secrets yet.

I love to read posts like this as I'm looking at my gun collection. lets see theres a remington, a ruger, a winchester, a savage, a thompson center, many times over. But the most important thing is they were made in the good old usa. I find most guns shoot as well as I can and the fact that I can contact them if I had a problem makes a big difference to me. I've never had a "cheap" gun fail me because I shoot enough to figure out if the gun is a loser before I hunt with it. Its to bad that Thompson center doesn't make a bolt action because that company knows how to treat a customer

I'd have to say Remington,Sako,Kimber,Marlin,TC and Ruger SA pistols don't suck. I have a boat load of all of them and never had a problem with any of them. I think it's more in how you take care of them, not how there made. If you beat the shit out of them I'm guessing your setting yourself up to have one fail on you. Works just like your car drive it like a mad woman shits and sure enough it's going to let you down.

My X-wife didn't suck......too much....

Hoeram, perhaps my standards are higher, or you have had more luck than me which is possible considering my Acura had 4 transmissions fail in under 79k miles, and I don't abuse it, just like my guns, I don't abuse them, so I just want to say that there are bad guns that have been mfg. that had problems before they had the 1st round fired after leaving the factory.

I have had my share. My guns all look in 99% or better for the most part, as I take care of them. Oh, nope, didn't abuse the x wife either! Kept her barrel clean and oiled her too just like my guns!

Sako doesn't suck.
Tikka doesn't suck.

I've had a rem that sucked and one that was great.
I've had a winchester that sucked. I looked at a rem 710 at the range and I won't even go there.
A Vanguard I had was nice too. Doesn't have that big stupid oversided bolt like the other weatherby's either.

S&W Revolvers don't suck.
IMI Desert Eagles don't suck and the 50AE is lots of fun.
Glock's dont suck. Neither do Jerichos. A no bells and whistles Colt .45 doesn't suck either.

Rugers....these are the only production rifles I've seen that truly suck as they come from the factory. And I'll qualify that, as its only the Mini-14s, Mini-30s and 10/22s that suck (I don't have any real experience with any others.)

But for example my Marlin 60 will outshoot ANY stock 10/22. My SKSs will shoot as well as a Mini-30, and we're talking about an old war rifle that wasn't made for accuracy in mind.

As far as the most common brands (Win, Rem, Savage,Ruger, etc.) the question should probably "which sucks less"...As mentioned, you can always get a lemon with any brand. But of the ppular brands, I think Savage is producing some of the best rifles for the money. My next purchase will be a Savage.

dfaugh,

I think their auto's leave alot to be desired (Ruger) except their 22 pistols.

I have owned a few 22 Marlins that shot very well, and if wanting better, might look at a TC for an auto, or even Browning.

The only firearms that have sucked, for me, were two Winchesters and a Savage. I have a Classic Featherweight in 6.5x55 that I have even had rebarreled by Hill Country that still will not shoot well with any load I have tried, so far. I guess I need to try heavier bullets, but I don't have as much time as I used to. The 140s started to show promise, but still over an inch. It may become a .280 soon.

The other was a M94 that I could never get a front sight high enough for. It shot high regardless of what I fed it, factory or handload, 150 or 170. I just said "bye" to it.

The Savage was an early Sierra in 308 when they still only used the long action for everything. The bolt would not always retract far enough to pick up the next round from the mag. It shot very accurately and ejected every case, but because the bolt would catch on the rear of the receiver, it would not pick up the next round.

These were just individual rifles and not indicative of a manufacturer, as one of the most accurate rifles I own is a Classic 70.

Other than that, I have had, and still own Winnies, Rems, Savages, Rugers, Browning Abolt, BLR, Highwall, Custom Mausers and all are great. That Highwall in 30-06 will still put three instde a dime, if I am working right.

"Rugers Suck" --

"Get rid of that sissy, chrome plated, semi-auto, pseudo-assault rifle, and get yourself a Ruger Number 1."

Ruger "Mini-14" had bbl. problems for a while until Ruger fixed it.

The Ruger 10/22 is a major gun for tweeking into a semi-auto "shooter."

Ruger "All Weather" is hot stuff.

Ruger customer service is excellent.
