beside the stock, is there a difference between the barrels of a M70 classic sporter and a featherweight in say 30 06 caliber? the classic 06 i have measures .600 at the 24" muzzle and the rifle weighs 8lbs as is - unloaded, unscoped and unslung.
can i assume the barrel contour is approx a no 3?
thanks,
jeff

There's quite a large difference....the FWT has the classic fwt contour and 22"....and the sporter has a barrel I'd rate as a #2 contour in .30 caliber....24"

Go to Douglas website....they make an identical contour of the Winchester FWT.....as a matter of fact they might be the mfr of the Winchester fwt...
It's a very different contour.....muzzle dia about .560...

.30 caliber.....and then the .30-06 max...magnums will require a larger shank diameter.

I dont know the number of the contour, but the featherweight classic in 30-06 weighs 2 lbs 2oz whereas the sporter barrel ie 24 instead of 22 weighs 2 lbs 11 oz, again in 3006
thanks guys. still thinking about a 33 bore for the 06 cartridge and was wondering if the classic sporter barrel or the featherweight barrel would be more appropriate.

While there has been proof of .358 caliber fwt barrels posted.....I don't know where one would get a barrel today even in .338 caliber based on the fwt contour.....Douglas is the only one making it and it ends at .30 caliber.....one can talk to them to see if they can make one for you.
I re contoured a barrel to fwt last year but it was only a .25 caliber.....so it's not the worst thing to do.....but here's my stand on that.....if it's so darn safe.....why isn't Douglas making it?.....

Personally for .338 bore, I would not go any lighter or shorter than .580@22", 1" chamber reinforce. The 3o/06 classic i had was near.585@24" the 338Mag classic was .580@26" A .338/06 .580@24"[maybe cut to 23"] Edge stock,leup.2.5-8x, would be neat.

What Pacnor did with my 22" 358 Fwt barrel to give it plenty of meat at the bore was to duplicate the factory contour/taper to the end of the stock and then maintained that diameter to the muzzle. Looks and handles great.
