Well, I bought one the other day 'cause it was in such great condition and I love pre-64's and I think I need a 338. I don't think it's fired a box of ammo yet. Very little bluing wear on the bolt rails and I can't see any bluing gone at all on the muzzle.

It's got a 24" barrel measured from the muzzle to the receiver ring/barrel junction. The barrel profile is just like my 270 standard pre-64. I was under the impression that the "Alaskan" model had a heavier barrel that was 25" long vs. the standard 24".

I sort of thought that EVERY pre '64 Model 70 338 was an "Alaskan" but maybe they aren't. The barrel isn't roll marked "Alaskan" anyway.

It appears to me anyway that this 338 is no different than a standard weight Model 70.

Maybe just because it's a 338 it's automatically an Alaskan? Not a big deal either way I guess. My question is purely academic. It's goin' afield regardless.

Are all pre-64 Model 70 338's the "Alaskan" model? I haven't been able to find the answer to this question the Internet thus far.

Thanks,

Tim
