I am wondering if anyone has shot a 300 RUM with lighter bullets? i.e. 125 through 165. If so, how was accuracy? Also, what kind of barrel life expectancy are you getting out of it? I was looking at the 30-378 Weatherby, but read reports of throat erosion after 250 shots. I hunt in southeastern Kansas where shots range from 300 to 600 yards.

I currently use a 7 mag with 140 grainers and had to buck run off 75 yards after a mid-chest shot.

I was just in your neck of the woods. I plan on trying some 168 TSX bullets in my 300 RUM. A buddy that shoots at the same range has almost the same settup as me and his load (same), was a tack driver.

For deer I recommend going with a 150 or 165 class bullet with the 300 RUM. The potential for blow up is high with a bullet of less wt, IMO.

In terms of erosion, just don't get that barrel hot. Heat is one of the biggest factors. I suspect that you should get at least 1500-2500 shots through your rifle with good accuracy so long as you take care of it.

I think that the best bullet weight for the 300 RUM is 200 grains. I've worked with 4 different 300 RUMs and the 200's were the most accurate in every one I tried them in. At long range the superior BC of a 200 gr bullet is going to be usefull. Instead of shooting lightweight bullets try some 200gr Accubonds.........DJ

My own testing with my two 300ultramags show the 180gr bullets to be the most accurate in my rifles.I also found the 180gr bullets to shoot almost as flat at 500 yards as the lighter bullets.

Here is some data for our 30/404, which predates the Remington offering, but as close as two can get.

Saeed,

Is there anything wrong with your data on the 300RUM that you did with the Sendero on the Reloading Pages?

There is one error that I can see with the Sierra 200 grain bullet.

One of the groups is written as having 9.xxx, which is not correct, it should be 0.xxx.

I will corrcet it tomorrow when I log into our server.

If you have noticed anything wrong, please let me know.

This rifle is one of the most accurate factory rifles I have seen in this caliber. In fact, I managed to get an iddentical one to it, but have not had the chance of shooting it yet.

I've tried the 150 interbonds and they didn't group well for me in my 300 RUM. I didn't waste alot of time on messing around with it much to see if I could find the magic combo though. 200 accubonds and RL25 is my go to load right now.

I wouldn't fool with anything less than a 180 gr. in that gun. There's no point in it. The trajectory difference between the 180's and either the 165 or 150 is almost imperceptible and you're not going to have as much energy down range, so there's no point in it. As for throat erosion, as the other fellow stated, as long as you're not doing a bunch of rapid fire shooting through a hot barrel, it should last a long time. My 338/378 has probably 700+ rounds through it so far and still shoots like a dream.

I've been trying a few 165 Barnes X'BT's with Re25 in my 300 RUM and it shoots pretty decent. Still my best is with 180 Ballistic Tips and Re25.

Well actually it is with 168 Grain Match kings and IMR7828 but that is just for messing around.

The only load I worked up for my RUM so far is with a 150 Sierra. We have a nasty coyote problem around here, so I worked up the load to blow them in half!!! To date, I haven't tried it in that context yet, but my 150 Sierra load with XMR 4350 gives me .6 MOA in my Savage. I was plannning on trying the same load with 165 grainers, since the load is not at max. It is a bit better than 3400 fps. My Savage also puts Rem factory 180 gr loads (Partitions) into just a shade over an inch. My load development has stopped since I plan to sell the gun. It produces as much energy as my .338 Win, and I don't need 2 elk rifles.Since it's a bit more than I need for deer, I plan to sell it.
