.284 winchester barrel length

if looking at a 284 winchester for a dual purpose gun, how much velocity would you compromise in say a 24" barrel to say a 26" or even shorter?

i dont have quickload so i cannot answer this one myself.

My rule of thumb is 50 - 75 fps/sec.

I shoot a 284 with a 24" barrel. Rl17 140 gr tipped triple shock 3025 fps in 3/4" groups. To me a 26" barrel is absolutely unnecessary and cumbersome.

You're looking at essentially the same powder capacity as a 270 or 280 and both of them are fine in 22" barrels.

To me,
A 24 is the way to go , in a 22 i think you might as well go with the 7mm08 and if you going to pack a 26 inch around you might as well get a magnum...tj3006

My sons .284 sports a 22" barrel and actually beats the pants off of any 7mm-08, its all about capacity and .284 has it.
My sons rifle is a Ruger M77 Flat Bolt, came factory in .284 Win.

thanks for the replies,

in all it will be an all rounder with a bit of long range target in the mix,
figured start with 26 and if it becomes an issue lugging it around then i can always go shorter later.

It's usually suggested that you lose 25 to 30 FPA per inch..but testing with different powders can usually get you about the same velocity with little or no loss at all..

It all depends on what dual purpose means

I hunt deer in very thick brush with my 24 in sav 99 without trouble.

If a bit more open I would be worried about a 26 inch barrel.

I shot hogs in thick brush with my 25 inch 416 no trouble.

But I like my 18 inch scout rifle also for that job.

over here i do very little thick brush stalking, if its confined then ill stick to the .308
as an allrounder for the 284 it will be for wide open ground,just have a play with the high bc bullets and range really be it at small game or paper.
