Blaser

I owned one about 4 years ago, It was a BDL stainless. I got rid of it, it was too much of a good thing.

I loaded some 230g failsafes into it at one stage and shot a doe running straight at me 3 times before she buckled under. All three shots hit within 4 or 5 inches of each other and reammed her out front to back. straight through. She'd been running a while the hounds were chasing her and I'm sure her adrealin was up, but still I'm sure a 200g ballistic tip would have stopped here sooner

A mate of mine was about 1/2 a mile away and recons he heard at least one bullet wizzing through the trees near where he was.

You need to use the right bullet, but it is an awesome calibre, but more so for long range work.

I sold it for a 375H&H, I mean if your going to put us with that sort of recoil, you might as well have a projectile of notable size coming out of the barrel

Good luck hope that helps

I have a 338 Ultra...Not much to not like.
225 Nosler 3177fps and 3/4-1" 200 yard groups.
250 Nosler and Barnes TSX both can be driven to 3000fps with very good accuracy.

Everything I have pointed it at has died shortly thereafter....Noticeably quicker than the 338 Win....Expansion is much more violent/explosive at Ultra velocities than at 338 win speeds.

Recoil levels are approaching the serious mark and if you don't like recoil you wont like the 338 Ultra.... I've had a few guys call my rifle vicious....I don't mind it at all, but I don't shoot it more than 50 or so times at an afternoon at the range.

I have a M700 LSS 338 RUM, its my go to rifle. Shoots all Nosler bullet weights .5" MOA. Nosler 250 gr PT has a MV of 3024 FPS. Added a Pachmyer Decelerator recoil pad, recoil isn't that bad even from prone.
It hits like a sledge hammer. I have shot WT deer, Mule deer, Black bear and a bull elk at 350 yds. Every animal has dropped in its tracks and never moved.
Here is the first animal, according to Nosler, to be taken with the Nosler 250 gr AB. Not much meat damage, this WT deer folded in his tracks.

I started using the 338 RUM in the fall of 07. We did a combo bear, moose and sheep hunt that year. No gizz or moose but did get my ram.

She is a Rem 700 LSS, the chambers been recut, action squared, Sako extractor, bedded and trigger job. Shoots good, have steel targets here out to 750yds and practice regularly out to that distance. Had a twin to this one, sold it, a move I now regret.
A few weeks later in CO, I scored on a nice bull. Gaining alot of respect fot this cartridge and the 225gr Accubond.

My spot in CO

Last fall in CO. Now using the 250gr Accubond and she's wearing a Nightforce scope. Took my mulie at 633 yds.

Also got my bulllast fall. A 450yd shot put him DRT, that 250gr AB gave full penetration lenghtwise on the animal

Easy to load for, my RUM is not real fussy what you feed her. With the brake its a pleasure to shoot, on the mulie I spotted my own hit. Even an old guy like me can do fairly well with it. A little heavy, but as long as I can lug it up the mountain it will be my go rifle.

Very nice reports Smiler

I guess that both Nosler Partition & Accubond from a 338RUM on close range like less than 100 yds would do some meat damage, what’s your experience with any bullets on that range from a 338RUM or Lapua?

I will probably go TSX with the 338RUM

Thanks Bjarne

I shot that little WT buck with the 250 gr AB at 40 yds. What you see is the exit wound.
Here is a write up on the 250 gr AB from the 338 RUM.

Your choice of the Barnes bullets is a good one. My partner uses a 340 Wby--basically the same ballistically as my RUM. It too is easy to load for. Among others it loves the 225 gr TTSX. Took a big cow last fall at around 100 yds, surprisingly we recovered the bullet--looked just like a pic from their add. I've also used their bullets in 6mm,300 Wby, 30-378 Wby and 375 H&H. That TTSX shoots so good in the 340, I'm going to give it a try in my RUM.

My 338RUM likes the 225 gr TTSX also

The problem is finding the bullets. Most of the internet suppliers are out and the local gun shop hasn't had any for 2 months. Found 2 boxes at Midsouth last night and ordered them. Last time I ordered something from Midsouth they notified me 2 days later that in fact the item I ordered was not in stock.

I took a Rem 700 with a custom barrel, HS-Precision bottom metal, Jewell trigger and a NXS 2.5-10X24 to Namibia last year, in 338 RUM.

In working up loads, no bullet, apart from the 185MRX grouped over .75.

The best bullet, on terminal performance parameters was the Lapua Naturalis 231gr tipped monometal.

I killed a Giraffe with a 225FN solid from S&H Precision.

Mountain Zebra, Blue Wildebeast taken with the Naturalis.

Numerous Hartebeest and Oryx taken with 225 TTSX, 225 TBBC, 225 A-Frame, 225 Accubond and 225 Partition.

The PH, Mike Kibble thought it was the most potent PG rifle he had ever seen........
