Decided to pick up a new fun rifle in the 7mm-08 and Savage has two models that their cs could not tell me what the difference is. Axis II xp is their lower price rifle with the accutriger Retail 485$ and the 11/111 Trophy hunter XP with the same trigger list 629$. specs on the gun seem similar, plastic stock, accutrigger, 22 inch barrel, length of pull .3 inch less on the axis. The other thing is the Trophy hunter weight 7.25 lb and the Axis II weighs 6.5 lb. I was told that the same barrel set up and locking lugs were the same. and that only thing was the receiver unit was stripped down and caused the wt difference. Wonder how much that effects the accuracy if the bolt and barrel set up is the same? Any one got any info on these? I will put the $ out if there is a big difference or one shoots better than the other but.... is it worth the extra $. I refuse to own a gun that shoots over an inch 3 shot spread at 100and that is factory not worked up loads. Been lazy and just changing out the bullets for my son's left hand 7mm-08 and still get about 3/4 inch groups. Thanks, Jim

The 11/111 is the continuous evolution of the same action they've made all these years. It has a ton of aftermarket support and all of the fun of switching out the barrels easily yourself. The Axis is the even cheaper version built to a price point for big box stores and chains. It's not available in Magnum chamberings, so the given weight difference (might) be down to leaving out reinforcements to the internals of the action. Both report the excellent accuracy famous in a Savage. Aesthetically, the Axis action has a weird hump shape, to my eyes.

I am looking for a fun gun to use out to 250 other wise I will get the old Remington 7 mag out. I was helping guide on a friend's place in South Texas and he does not appreciate long range shooting though I did shoot a doe at 270 yards off the open door when the area was clear. My son's 11/111 is a great gun and dead on for a single shot for a right hander since he shoots left handed. 140gr Nosler seem to shoot quite well out of this gun and I am guessing it would shoot well out of a right handed one too with hand loads.

These are my opinions on the differences that lean me towards the Savage 11/111. The 11/111 has a stock that sucks less IMO than the Axis, but they both suck. The 11/111 has a metal tang that the safety is mounted to, the Axis has a plastic. The Axis has a huge plastic cut out for the trigger assembly in the bottom of the stock that I think gives it another point to flex more than the 11/111 stock. It's much easier to load from the top if you want to single load the 11/111, the Axis has a small port and it's more difficult to single load.

Jim, Around 4 years ago I came to range with an Axis .223 and you sat down with the rifle and confirmed the upward movement of my cross hair on a 100 yd target. You took the rifle to your bench and noted the same movement when pulling the trigger. So, I agree what taylorce1 wrote about stock flex of Axis stock due to its design....my 80 or so piece wood stock solved its flex problem. Chuckle, ask Howard about the two.
