Hi fellas, I just managed a trade deal and eneded up with a Model 70 Carbine in 270 cal. The rifle is nice and light and compact,I believe it to be an 18" barrel.....Where would I be able to find the twist rate on this rifle, and am I gonna be able to shoot bullets up to the 160-170 gr weight(more curiosity than anything,if they even make them)....if not,it's no big deal I bought it for my gal to use, based on the size of it and the fit....the barrel is original, are there any things to be concerned with being such a short barrel on this rig.....anyone else have one...I have about 900 pcs of lead in various manufacturers to relaod with in 130 and 140 gr weight ranges...mostly Hornaday, but there is 200 pcs of Sierra ProHunters and 100 Barnes triple shocks in 130 gr's I will mainly hunt deer and the odd elk if it pops into a decent range....thanks for any help and advice

I don't have a carbeam rifle my barrel is 22 inches long. Still a little short. I just today shot some 150 gr bullets with my 270 Win. The biggest bullets I've heard about for the 270 is the 160 gr bullets.I haven't shot any because I just got the 150 gr bullet up to 2910 FPS. My 140s go pretty good and so do the 130 gr bullets. I also have some 110gr bullets loaded. They suppose to go about 3200 fps. Hope you can use some of this Info.

If that is a Winchester Model 70 Lightweight Carbine, it should have a 20" barrel of the same countour as the featherweight. I had one for years in 30-06, very lightweight and compact, but kicked pretty good with full house loads when shooting from the bench. Still, a very nice rifle. Don't think I would have chosen a lightweight .270 for a novice shooter/child/petite woman. Not when there are good 6.5x55 mausers and .260 Remingtons available. Bullets are pretty worthless. All they do is hang around waiting to get loaded.

Suggest you start with reduced reloads or some of the new light recoil ammo. Would reduce kick and muzzle blast for the beginning shooter. 270 Winchester - ________ Ray

My mistake fellas it is a 20 " barrel on it.....We've have actually done a fair bit of shooting....from 22 up to 338 mag and 300wtby...recoil and such is not a problem for either of us....the only reason I took it on a swap was that it fit both her and I really well...hopefully will make it out sometime shortly to try it out....thanks for the info thus far

I'd be surprised if the twist rate is any different than the longer barreled ones. If you put a cleaning rod with a brush on it in the bore and mark( both for orientation and depth) it then push it in or pull it out (depending on how you set it up, pulling out is usually easier) till it's made one rev, you should be able to measure the difference and determine the twist. When I had that rifle I breifly tried 150 gr partitions with h4831sc. Results were OK, not great. I had a hard time shooting that rifle well, the recoil (whether it was stock fit or what I don't know) was absolutely brutal, very fast.

another CGN gunslut eh? I agree with MbS that strt out a little light, and see how much muzzle blast you can tolerate. They are nice funs though. Twist rate should not be an issue/

Winchester catologs show 1 in 10 twist on all variations of their .270's. I have the same rifle in 30/06 except mine came with a laminate stock, with 180 grain bullets going about 2800 this gun kicks HARD but I've got it shooting sub MOA so I'm real happy with it. For your .270 any of the standard weights will do all you need for deer/ antelope and for the elk stay with the 140 to 150 weights for a little advantage, sometimes those elk take a little more killing than ya think they should.
