Reading these threads about stretching out the capabilities of the 30-06 made me wonder how far one can stretch the infamous 300 H&H. I have a box of 200 gr Nosler Partitons and a box of 220 gr Hornady Interlocks (boy are they long bullets) and a bottle of 4350. I'll be shooting them out of my Pre-64 M70.

Thanks,

JDG

One can potentially push the 220 graines a bit over 2700 FPS and the 200 grainers somewhere about 2900 FPS

Data from Hodgdon's reloading center.

The 200 gr Nosler Partition will make your 300 a real hard hitter. I use the 200 gr Nosler Acubond in mine, excellent accuracy and hits hard.

Yep! I fuel mine with IMR7828 and it's a hammer.

It's like Lb404 says a lot of people on the internet have advise on calibers they have not used at all or not much perhaps..

The 300 H&H is a real sleeper and will beat the socks off most of the newbies..

My old worn out 300 H&H, a pre 64 Win with a 26 inch barrel has been fed a steady diet of 200 gr. Nosler partitions since the bullet was introduced. I shoot it with a max in my gun of old surplus 4831 at 3,054 FPS, The newer 4831 won't get that but several books quote very close to 3000 FPS and some quote that, and I have quoted those books in several previous posts.

For the record this old powder usually goes 2 grs. over the new stuff, at least in the 300 and and 3 grs in a 270. and at less pressure. This powder was made in the USA, and it was military, sometimes called 4350 data powder according to Jack O'Connor and the new 4831 is made in Scotland last I checked. I bought a 150 lb. stainless steel keg within a heavy wooden crate some 30 years ago from an old Twin Falls gunsmith..Prior to that most folks used it. Thats my history lesson for the day. wave

My favorite soft and solid load with a 220 gr. bullet, softs in Nosler and Woodleighs and solids in Woodlighs get me 2788 FPS., and I get almost 2800 FPS with the solids. Super accurate loads.

10 shots with the high and low taken out. With the 300 H&H its best to trim each time with any load including the factory loads as its design tends to create that brass flow problem, and sometimes only one or two will flow, so check to be sure with every reloading session. Its the nature of the beast, that long slopeing case designed for cordite, but its worth it to me..I get 10 to 14 reloads from each case.

Other powders that will come fairly close to my old surplus powder ( Jack O'Connors powder ) are RL-22, RL-19 or so I am told.

That old rifle has killed about every thing on both continents including elephant but not by me. The biggest thing I have shot with it is a cape buffalo and a number of Eland.

I worked up to 64 gr with the 200 TSX in my pre 64 while the Nosler book tops out at 63 gr of the H4350. Thinking the Hodgon book max's out at 66 gr. Shoots great.

4350 will certainly work in the .300 H&H with heavier bullets, but it is on the fast side for optimum velocities. My H&H likes IMR 7828, and though it will easily exceed 3,000 fps with a 180, I like to run it around its classic velocity of about 2960 fps. I've tried the 200 grain Nosler Accubond in it believe that it tops out close to 2900 fps in my 24.4 inch barrel.

Interesting for me to read this as I just picked up the Winchester Safari 1885 in 300H&H. As I put a 4.5-14 Conquest w/z800 reticle on it, I sort of have to try to achieve 3000 or so plus with it to get the reticle to compute properly. A 180 around 3050 t0 3100 would likely work out ideally for this scenario. I was looking at the manuals a thinking I may (if the gun cooperates) be well able to do this with the 28" barrel on it.
I have a few things to try, Accubonds, TTSX's,NP's.
Other option is 165 gr which should easily be able to reach 3100+ as I am interpreting what I am reading as I look around.
Interested to hear what velocities people are getting with various barrels & bullets, and develop a little clearer idea of what is reasonable to expect out of this cartridge with a 180.
