I have an AR-10 that would currently make a good tomato stake. Since the day I bought it new I have been unable to get it to shoot under 2 MOA.

I want to rebarrel and use it for 600 yard highpower matches. Please offer suggestions for a good round and why. I am open to anything, just curious what has worked for others.

Forget it is an AR-10. What would be an effecient cartridge to send high BC bullets out to 600 plus yards? 6.5-08, 7-08? and can fit in a magazine designed for a 308.

This for target shooting not hunting

May I suggest to you that your AR-10 is already chambered in a fine cartridge for 600 yard competition? The .308 has long done well at distances through 1,000 yards, in both bolt actions and semi-autos. (The competition M-14/M1-A was top dog for some years.)

Having said that, my first suggestion would be that you accurize your rifle, not change your cartridge. That may ultimately require a better barrel, but not necessarily a different chambering.

If having thought it all through you still want to change your cartridge, I would suggest either the .260 Remington or the 7mm/08. You can go even more exotic, but if you do, be prepared to sort out feeding problems. As you know, feeding problems can be very destructive of high scores...especially through the rapid-fire stages.

I'd ask what ammunition are you using in it? It should shoot fine with 144 grain FMJ-BT NATO Standard cartridges....

You need to "pressure test" the action before moving to a different caliber. Fill an 08 case level full of Bullseye.Compress it with a 200 Grain Nosler (or whatever). Put the but inside an old tractor tire and get behind something big, heavy, and thick and touch her off remote control (with a string). Big Grin

Okay, just kidding!

The 308 will work great. See how Black Hills match ammo does as a baseline measurement. If it will shoot that into 1 MOA you know that the current gun is capable.

(I'm not insinuating anything but we don't know what the shooter is capable of so it's hard to judge the rifle)

If I was going to change to another caliber for high power I would look seriously at the 260 Rem for the lower recoil and great bullets available. Although the 243 is another option I like a little more bullet weight that the 264 bore offers. Single loading for 600 yards means that you don't have to worry about magazine length with the high BC bullets.

I have tried Federal Gold Medal, Lake City Match, hunting ammo, several different reloads, even FL resize some of my Palma brass and tried my Palma loads, nothing seems to shoot. I will use either Medesha or Sabreco and build a new upper. I like the 308 but just curious if people feel something is better. I kind of like the 260.

Fjold,

As far as the shooter I have a Master Clssification in Long Range and Across the course NRA highpower. That should trump Shootaway's expert status. Big Grin

I can holder tighter groups at 100 yards with my 416 Rem than I can with the AR-10 rifle, it really has been dissapointing and frustrating.

Last chance! Can you shoot the rifle from a clamp or from an "Enfield Box"? It may be that there is some problem with the sights not remaining in the same position from shot to shot.

I had this with a BRNO ZKK. t would not shoot into less than 2.5 MOA consistently with its 'scope. Sometimes 1 MOA, sometimes 2 MOA, sometimes 2.5 MOA.

I was frustrated! But I dry fired it and noticed a "twitch" on the 'scope post. So I tried it with iron sights. 3 shots .5 MOA at 100 yards off a bench with its factory iron sights!

So it wasn't the gun...it was the 'scope. My brother's AR10 (before they were banned in UK in 1988 by the same Mrs Thatcher some Americans seem in love with) would shoot 1 MOA.

This is certainly not the most practical suggestion but how about the 300 Rem. SAUM? In fact, DPMS or Panther recently introduced an AR-10 variant in this cartridge.

+ 3!

I was casual shooting one afternoon at the range, with a couple of FBI sniper team guys on their day off.. they were out practicing with their 300 Win Mag, FBI issued...

They shot my 260 Rem VLS and were shocked on what it could do with a 120 grain bullet at 600 and 800 yds.. and " the lack of recoil" was what they were saying over and over.. they had never even heard of a 260 Rem... but both were going home saying they were going to buy one for their own personal use......
