How low can speed go to open the 338 dia. 200gr on deer? Thinking how far it will work out of the new 338 Federal at 2650 mv. reply:You should have about 1500 fps to open a 200 gr bullet on deer. So the federal round should open at 450 to 475 yards. Sounds like that bullet will be ALL the bullet anyone can need on deer unless you like SERIOUS SNIPING, but that is further than I have ever taken any deer. 400 yds the longest, with a 6BR and 105 Amax I might add. Double lung and my 6-24 x helped a lot, with mil-dots that I used. That is not a rifle I would want in ALL conditions for long shots on deer. BUT it IS effective when you can call your shot, and make it.

Hey close enough for government work.... Also, I can see the potential as a youth load.... A 200 grain, 338 bore, bullet with an MV of 2000fps... would be a serious 150 to 200 yd deer rifle alone.....on some serious sized deer no less.... with higher sectional density than the 200 grain bullet in a 358 Winchester, I see the 338 Federal as a superior round....which some act like is all the medicine anyone needs for anything.... I can see a new barrel on one of my short action Ruger's future....Already have a nice 1.5 x 6 Bausch and Lomb scope to go on it...... Cool! cheers seafire

seafire, my exact reply to hornady was I assume the load combo comes close to a 358/225 combo, he replied it should be very similar. I had my 338/06 in the past outfitted with the 1.5-6x, a little on the heavy side, of course the rifle was 8.0 itself bare, but none the less it was nice in Colorado chasing elk. Had a few mulies in timber that only a LOW mag would work, had it on 2-3x, unfortunately the deer season just ended a few days earlier and I could only take elk. It would have been a quick shot, fast reflexes and a light rifle would help, the low scope mag was essential for a shot to happen as they were moving, 2 bucks. Darned nice, but timing of season not there...... I intend to do 2 projects when finances allow, a 338 Federal, and a 6.5x55 Ruger no. 1 Have a great day.

Don't ask me why but I wish the 200 grain flatnose was still available. I'm waffling between the .338 fed and .358 Win. Don't NEED either just want one for an open sight project and since I have so many .338s already I'm leaning toward the Federal just to keep compnents to a minimum. The 358 has appeal because of the flatnose bullets available. Aut vincere aut mori

I shoot 7BR and 708 and its easy to use same bullets......good reason for the 338, those FP's would do well at shorter ranges expanding at minimal velocity. Same here, don't NEED one, but darned sure want and plan to have one. I like big heavy bullets for certain uses, and do not like magnum recoil. 308/06/7x57 size cases offer most shooters what they need, w/o things they don't need. There are exceptions of course.

Crusher.... That sounds pretty darn cool! I like your style and way of thinking....3.5 inches high at 100 yds should put that bullet dead on at about 220 yds.. and 4 inches low at 260 to 275 yds.... That 160 grain X Bullet will also open up down to about 1500 fps or less..... Sounds like a great rifle for in the truck or high country back packing... cheers seafire

the only one I have ever recovered was opend up well. mostly they just go through. have been testing it on everything I can will be tacking it to africa next year if I can swing it. it works best inside 150 yds but has yet to fail in killing . dead on at 50 dead on at 175 it is a super cool stalking rifle. building one on an ar now. the full velocity is from a 16 in bbl longer did not help increase velocity tried 20 and 18 they were not as fast. Ohhh, there's a nice happy thought. AR, FAL, and and other 308 chambered combat rifles, rebarreled and chambered for .338 Fedral. Not very practical, but oh so much fun. mike
