| Even with a hollow butt it is no problem to shorten. I have had to do this and by setting a suitably shaped timber fillet into the butt with expanding glue foam you get a base to screw the pad back onto. Set the timber fillet a bit long with a i/2 in hole in the centre so the tube from the roam can may be put through, and when it has set up you can trim to length and you are good to go. Von Gruff. |

| You can always remove the pad, cut the stock, trim the pad and glue it back on as well. It has worked for me, as long as you don't want to lengthen it again.

| thanks for the replies guys i hadn't even thought about making an insert if the stock was hollow that should work if in fact the stock turns out to be hollow that is.
ive been thinking about how to do this all day and the only thing i had came up with was if the stock was hollow i could cut the very rear portion of the trimmed off piece off and glue it to the stock and then put a slip on recould pad over it to hide it. i think an insert glued inside may work better though. |

| If you buy a Savage 110 series youth or youth package, it will come with a shorter stock and you can buy a stock via eBay if you ever want a longer stock. Sometimes, I have found those Savage youth package guns selling for less than just the regular rifles, although, I think that the youth guns all have 22" barrels.

| I would reccomend a Savage model 11 youth. I used one in .243 Win 2 years ago for hunting, because I was 11 years old. It solved all of my problems and also shot 1/2 " groups at a 100 yards! |

| i would love to buy her a youth model rifle. the problem is finding one in stock anywhere in a caliber that i want. ive been mainly looking for 7mm-08 with zero luck so far.
what i would really like is to find a 110 in .270win with a youth stock. this is not available though and you can't even buy a youth stock to put on the fullsize as all of the youth stocks are for short actions. |

| I don't how far from Texas you are, but Academy sells a lower cost Savage in a 7-08 or 270. I bought one for my son and it prints small groups. The trigger is a little heavy, but can be lightened very easily. Add the new Redfield scope and you have a very good rig and not a lot of money invested

| Why are you looking for a youth model? IMO if you want to turn your wife off to hunting or any shooting sport, put a noisy shoulder kicker in her hands. The .308 is the perfect round, forgiving and unmatched in accuracy but even the .308 can be a shoulder beater in "light rifles". Get a "sqezzy" butt stock and go for a good quality brake on a lightweight skin and you might have a new hunting pal you can share the sleeping bag with! The worst part of hunting shouldn't be pulling the trigger. Check this one out: 16 FHSAK @ savagearms.com Good luck..... |

| whatthe im not so worried about the recoil as i can load some reduced rounds for her if it is needed. the problem is that an adult size rifle is to long for her. she is stretching for the trigger and the scope. yes i could move the scope back but that wouldn't change the fact that she is reaching for the trigger and not comfortable holding the rifle. we got the chance for her to shoot a youth rifle a couple weekends ago and it fit her perfect. she felt comfortable with it so that is what she will be getting. |

| well this problem has been solved. ive been looking for weeks for a youth rifle in 7mm-08 with no luck and it seemed that all of the distributers were out of stock also. well wednesday i walked into the local pawn and gun just to check out what was new and low and behold there was a youth rifle sitting on the rack. i asked to see it and ill be damned if it wasn't a marlin xs7 youth in 7mm-08. it was the package deal with the base/rings/and cheap 4-12x50 scope on it. turned the price tag over and it was $359. the trigger feels nice on it out of the box, the scope may actually be better than i anticipated. it is unmarked but appears to be a bushnell i was expecting the $39 bushnell so i was suprised that it was the $70 or $80 one. i took it outside last night right at dark 1735 is the average end of shooting hours here and it wasn't nearly as clear as my leupolds but i still could have taken a shot. im going to pull the scope and base and clean make sure there is no oil and loctight the base on slap a new set of rings to replace the crappy ones and see how the scope holds up for the rest of this year atleast.
while waiting on the paper work i was telling the guy that i had been looking for one for several weeks with no luck. he said they hadn't been able to get any either and that this one had just came in and hit the rack 30min before i got there. hell it even came with a hoppes cleaning kit and a pair of safety glasses. |
