I'm not trying to start a fight but I have been experimenting with a 35-284 for about 6 months now and I want to know why Winchester came out with their short mag. I have a short action Ruger M77 (old style) that with a 25 in. barrel gives me 2720 with the Northfork 225 bullet. You can't tell me necking out the WSM to 35 caliber will make it this far superior hunting cartridge. Just the same I bet if Winchester would have just necked the 284 case out to 30 caliber they would have had a better cartidge than the WSM. 1st-The 284 case allows you to put 4 cartridges in the magazine the WSM only allows 3. 2nd-I still used my standard bolt face. 3rd-I bet velocity increase is at the most maybe 125fps and we know in the ballistic world that means very very little. Am I way off base here or does seem valid to people. I guess in the end I just want to make sure there continues to be a good supply of 284 brass for my 35-284. But I still don't think it really does anything the 284 case can do. Ok... I"m done venting for now.

The problem with the 284 W is that it never looked right to me. It didn't look right when it came out and it still doesn't. It's a subjective
feeling.

Case capacity of the .284 case is essentially the same as the .30/06....the case of the WSM (and SAUM) holds more powder....with the resulting higher velocity.

I also heard that the .284 brass is expensive to make as the rejection rate was very high. To me, the .284 case capacity seems perfect for 6mm, the .257 and 6.5mm wildcats...especially the .257.

Red you are much too practicle to be in marketing. Winchester did it to do it before Rem could.
I own and enjoy reloading, shooting a 300WSM mag capacity had nothing to do with my decision as Its a break open single shot. It is not a 4 groove barrel as in the Winchesters either. I feel I would have been just as happy with a 30-06AI all told.
That being said the next barrel for my Encore will be a 26" 6.5-284. If I were to order a .25 cal it too would be based on the 284 case.

I agree that the performance of your round is more then sufficient.

That said, selling new rifles isn't about what is sufficient, it is about saying you have the latest and greatest. Most hunters will never take enough game, if any, to realize that their super whatsit isn't any better then the old standards that have been around for 100 yrs.

Five best reasons for chambering for WSM over .284-based cartridges:

5. Overwhelming desire to ream out the bolt face of a short action to fit a magnum rim.

4. Give game a sporting chance by decreasing magazine capacity.

3. Cartridge fits chamber sideways as easily as straight-on.

4. Keep local gunsmith off of welfare.

and, drumroll please,
5. Never heard of a .284.

Stonecreek, that was pretty good, though every one remembers the last time we had a short action magnum, can anyone say 6.5 rem mag and 350 rem mag (even though I have a 350 rem mag).

I agree with Redside though. I am building a 338-284, to duplpicate the 338-06 on a short action. Why, because I want to. I am using the same action, Ruger 77 Tang Safety.

Redside,

Are you having any problems getting yours to feed? Mine is still at Pac Nor, hopefully it will come in soon. Did you have to alter the action any? What cal was yours to start? Mine was a 308.

My .35/.284 has a tang safety too, but its a Savage M99 Featherweight with an MPI lightweight fiberglas stock (w/schnable forearm)!! Long live the .284 Winchester case, but just in case, I bought 300 of 'em from Midway last spring.

Hey Redside, how 'bout some suggested loads?

I've just started experimentation. First powder to be tried is Vhita Vouri 540 behind Hornady 250 RN. (Chose RN due to short overall length requirement in the 99's rotary magazine...2.8 inches.)

P.S.: Paul, we need to get together for another lunch so you can see this thing.

Jerry,

Long time no hear! Kinda sad, considering we both live in the same town.

Anyhow, yeah we need to hook up for lunch, and I can show you my 350 Rigby.

No feeding problems with the Ruger at all. Everything works perfectly. There was no alterations done except putting a shilen #3 1-14 twist barrel and a McMillan stock with a Zeiss Conquest scope. It shoots and works great. I went shooting with my nephew the other day and after shooting a four shot group he ran down and looked then came back and told me I had missed the target twice because there were only two holes. I assured him that wasn't the case, four shot had gone into two holes making a nice .450 in group. My best load so far has been with 225 Northfork bullets. I'm getting over 2700fps with these bullets.
