If I could have only one to hunt my home territory, it would probably be my .270 Win., but I could do very nicely with my 6.5X55 or my .358 Win. also.

I don't own a 30-06, because I think there are too many cartridges available now that are better suited to specific sized game. The '06 is too much of a good thing for varmints, more than what I really need for deer, smaller than what I prefer for elk, and much smaller than what I'd feel comfortable with for dangerous game. However, if I could only have one rifle, I would build a 30-06, and develop pet loads for all bullet weights..

MAGNUM IS A RELATIVE TERM. IT DOESEN`T MEAN VELOCITY, BECAUSE YOU HAVE MAGNUMS AT 2600 FPS LIKE THE .338, AND NAGNUMS AT 3000 FPS -.270-, AND IN THE OTHER HAND IT DOESN`T MEAN RECOIL, CAUSE FOR INSTANCE THE 7 REM MAG, HAS LESS RECIL THAN A 30-06.

RESULT:CHOOSE THE CALIBRE YOU LIKE, BE SHURE YOU`RE CAPPABLE OF PUTTING THE BULLET IN THE RIGHT PLACE!.

GOOD HUNTING.

At 150 yards I'd be satisfied with a Win. M-94 in 30-30 caliber for about anything on the NA continent under 95% of the circumstances...

I like a lot of calibers but my favorite is the 30-06 I suppose, and the 7x57 but other rounds like the .308, .280, and the .270 are just as good...

I doubt if anyone could truly tell much difference in any of them in range or killing power in the field..and on paper the difference is not much and paper is misleading and just makes for dull conversation IMO......

308 win has to be my favorite. I dont own one now. I have a 30-06 for now. I was looking for a 308 win when I came across the 30-06 I have now.

It was a good deal and the 30-06 can do anything the 308 can so it cant be all bad.

.280/7mm Remington Express. It will kill any big game animal in North America (although I don't recommend you hunt Brown Bear at close range, although it can easily kill one) and any Plains game of Africa. Flat shooting and in experienced hands out to 600 yards it has enough energy to break Elk shoulders and pass through. Easy on recoil and available bullet choices are excellent.

Yes, I agree. I posted earlier about the 270 or 30/06 but the 280 is the superior round to them both IMO. I own the 270 though!

If I were rich, I would own 1 gun and that would be the 280 Ackley Improved. I would also have the gun custom made with a 10 shot clip. That way I would feel safer in bear country.

Well I'll throw my two bits in. One? Hmmmmmmm this is tough. 35 Whelen is right now. But if I could only have one for what I do it would be a 270 winchester. I don't own one right now but after a deal with 91xlt over at the 24hr campfire I'll have two 06's so one will probably end up in 270 win. If I lived in the far north I would carry my whelen all the time though.

Easy question to answer for me. 7x57 works for almost anything with almost no recoil even in a light rifle, penetrates, kills game, has a fantastic and long classic hunting history.

If you look around you can load the 30-06 with 85 gr bullets for small game, and 220 gr. bullets for really big stuff at shorter distances. Beats out the 308 because it has a bigger case.

30-06, no wait the 270, no wait the 25-06, no the 338 Federal, no the 30-06...... nilly

You really can't go wrong with any of them. I prefer the 06 based cases, but the 338 federal is growing on me. Never had much use for the 308 despite it's poularity.

Good Luck

The choice is easy: 30-06!

Plenty of velocity and energy. Great trajectory! Tremendous selection of factory ammo and if you reload the possibilities are almost endless.

Another vote for the tried & true .270 Win. Feed her a good dose of Rldr-22 with a 150 gr. Partition & you're good to go for most anything in North America. Bear in Fairbanks

count me in the .308 camp. It'll do anything the '06 will and I can get surp ammo for plinking, it'll fit in lighter shorter actions, and works better with a short barrel. If you need heavier than a .308 you need more than an '06.

This is almost an impossible question. I seldom think in terms of having to pick just one cartridge. I like many, but not all. I recently moved, and found it very impractical to bring several rifles with me. So, which one did I bring? The 308 in a Ruger all weather 77 MkII. Since I won't be handloading for a while, I can always find ammo on the local shelf.

I also like the 8x57 because it uses a little larger and heavier bullet, and it is the perfect round for a Mauser action.

When I hunt places where a brown bear may join the party, I really like to carry my 9.3x62.

Either of these will do , but I like the velocity of the Brenneke ..And the rifle that mine is ..
Haveing reciently got a 375 Ruger and chronographing it , tho I really like it Iit isn,t showing me anything with factory ammo that my Brenneke hasn,t already shown me .... ....
Difference is , you can walk into Walmart and walk out with a 375 Ruger and ammo and hunt the world over just fine ...
A friend reciently went squirel hunting with my 458 Lott just for grins ,so I don,t think overkill is a viable word .......
since imo all the best cartridges have the word magnum attached to them ,.....Hey wait a minute , the 358 STA doesn,t have the word Magnum attached to it , ,

.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....
