Put a new Millet 6X25X56 varmint mill dot scope on my new Savage 7MM STW and can't go fire a shot because of the rain. I have only fired 12 rounds through this gun so far and I am going crazy to see if I can get this to be as accurate as other people say that Savage's can be.

so far i've cleaned my .45 combat commander, my .25 baby browning, and im working on a recently acquired whitwoth .458.... slicking the action up....at least tonite at our club's meeting, i'll get to show off my new chapius....

Yeah, and if it rains too much you need a boat to get into American Shooting Centers! After all it is part of the flood control behind Addicks Dam.

After the water goes down the skeeters get so bad you can get a ricochet off a big one.

The heck with it! I'm leaving for Minnesota this morning. We'll make a loop across to California and back through Phoenix. We'll be back at the end of the month. You guys squeegee off all the water while we're gone!

are millets not waterproof?

Was going to go to the range today with a break in the rain, but wife got a hold of her doctor and set an appointment that I had to take her to. Maybe Saturday???

Yes Millets are waterproof, its just finding the time and with the downpours we have been having two hundred yards can be obscured from view.

When it does quit raining I don't think I will get laughed at when I show up at the range in my bug suite. Three of American Shooters shotgun ranges are shut down due to high water. I imagine when it does quit raining the ranges will be shoulder to shoulder as well.

Not to mention paper targets don't hold up too well when soaked!

Found a cure for that. They sell this thin clear vinyl that is sticky on one side. Use it to put down on carpet when they have a showcase of homes. It is about 24" wide and comes in 100' rolls. Cover your target front and back with it and go shooting. Looks like this on the paper

As I was thinking back of all my hunts, I have never hunted in the rain. Not to say I would not, just never have to date.

If you question is sugesting that you can fire a gun in the rain, that is not the point of workiing up an accurate load and being able to see your target.

I would not have a problem sighting in my rifles in the rain if I knew that the majority of my hunting trips were going to be during rain storms. Then again I probably would not be concerned about a target 200 yards away either. Since I don,t hunt in rain, I don't see the benifit of subjecting myself or my equipment to the elements.

i would suggest to you that any difference that rain could cause in your load would not be appreciated in the field.
furthermore to say that you will not be able to preform to a level equal to your bench standard if the weather turns bad unless you yourself have already been exposed to it.
its a compfort to know that i can make the shot soaked to the drawers.

It's the 6th straight day above 100 degrees here and Friday it was 110 at the airport and 113 downtown.

The mirage is so bad you can't see the target frames at 100 yards.

The rain events that we have been having have been torrential downpours. In sighting in my rifels at two hundred yards, this is difficult when you can not see the target.
Do you have a special knack of being able to see though rain events, when they obscure targets, that mere mortal people can not see?

I went to the range this mourning and they are closed because of high water. How would you suggest that I use that range when the gate to the entry is barricaded and it is nearly three hundred yards across a field with about two to three feet of water? Its not raining but still can not use that range.

I have no doubt of my ability to shoot soaked to the drawers, but why would I voluntarily do this if I do not have to? I am no fool that thinks accuracy at the bench will equate to accuracy in the field. But I do demand the most accurate load that I can achieve to take into the field.

try lemons. they are highly visible and very easy to tell when you make a hit.

Slow but steady. Shooting lemons at two hundred yards, now that sounds like an interesting challenge. I will have to set up a few when the water recedes. Should I stand them on their ends or on their sides, I suppose that depends on if there is a wind.

use one of those water ballon sling shots so you dont have to go down range. also usefull for unknown distance practice.

I was also thinking of getting some birthday balloons and securing them to the rail down range. You can make them as big or small as you want. Aught to be fun shooting when I find my load.

try filling the balloon with some water... just enough to make it hang down... then you can see the splash....or get some tannerite from mjines....

Hey Harold, I got to use one of my new Milletts today. It was the 3-9x 44mm Buck Lightning. I have it on a 308Win Wby U-Lt. Not the heaviest Recoil in the world, but a fine match for the scope.

No complaints and better still, no problems at all. The scope tracked well in the adjustments and would return to the same spot when shooting a large square by just changing the adjustments.

Hopefully the Scope Mounts for the other one "might" be in tomorrow. It will be on a 7mmRemMag to start with.

Is your water down yet?

if you want to use ballons your gonna need a good RC truck w/ a long antena and a cop pilot to drive it for you.
works great for moving shot. i tie two different colored ballons to the antena to trian for hostage shoots. and i use a small ballone for turkey training.

Glad to hear you like the Millet. I have done my ladder test and will try to get to the range again this weekend to select the desired tweaks I want from the initial test. I will put my Millet though its paces then. So far I like it, especially for what I have in it.

Hey Harold, FINALLY got the proper height 30mm Burris Signatures in for the 4-16x 50mm Side AO Illuminated Tactical(Model 81001). The Set I ordered looked like they would be the "High" set in the Natchez catalog and actually they were the Extra High set. A buddy at a local Gun Shop where I've done some trading bailed me out and swapped them for me.

Did some measuring and determined the Medium height might work since the Side AO allows the Front Bell to be smaller in OD than a regular Front AO style. Got the Rings onto the 7mmRemMag and when the scope went in, it was as close to perfect as I've seen in a long time. If the Rings had been any shorter, the Bolt Handle would not have cleared the Power Adjustment Ring.

So, now I'm looking forward to getting some Trigger Time on this one too. I need to go bush-hog a lane to shoot down so I can really stretch it out.

Completely agree with you, I also think they are quite a bargain - so far. Time and Recoil will either confirm or change that position.

Both of the Milletts I have have Illuminated Reticles(IR) which makes them just a bit heavier than normal scopes. I'd always thought I'd like the IR feature. Also have an Optronics with IR that I'm trying out. The IR on the Optronics is too bright on the Lowest Setting, but both Milletts are perfect in this aspect.

Once the Optronics gets hammered, it will probably end up on a 22LR for Squirrel Hunting when the leaves are on. That "brightness" will work fine there.

Ive read on another forum that Millet listned to their customers and toned down the brightness of the illumination. Wow, giving the customer what they want. I was initially looking for the TRS-1 illuminated scope. It seemed that all suppliers were out of stock when I came across the one I have.

I had planned on going to the range today and at the chance of getting chastised for not shooting in the rain again (lol), I will have to just load up some other rounds.
