I have a new to me US Savage Enfield No. 4 Mk. 1 in .303 British. The rear peep sight has two elevations marked "300" and "600". Does anybody know what units these are for? I assume feet, as meters would be a tall shot for that rifle. Thanks! John

Alan Petrillo's book The Lee Enfield Number 4 Rifles identifies these as Mark 2 sights and indicate 300 and 600 yards -- S40 Youth and vitality are wasted on the young.

if you do an internet search and find a MK1 Singer back sight you will make the rifle a whole lot better to shoot the mk2 sight was a wartime short cut that was usually replaced if the rifle ever had to be repaired the 300y setting would be shooting quite high at 100y my guess would be about 12" I have a No4 Mk2 that I shoot in Military Rifle events here in Oz with standard sights and good reloads you can land bullets inside a 14" tyre at 600y off of a good bench they certainly can shoot
