I have a .243, 30'06, .338 but want something new, lightweight, flatter than the '06, heavier hitting than the .243 (but lighter weight) to be used for antelope and maybe sheep, whitetails and goats. Lightweight and flat are the key elements. How do the above noted rounds stack up in your opinions?
The .7-08 isn't going to give you any flatter traj. than your 06. The .270WSM is probably what you are looking for, but the 7mmWSM will give you more bullet choices. I'm a 7mm guy so my choice would be 7mmWSM or 7mmSAUM for a lt.wt. med. game rig (although mine is a 7 1/4# .280).

The 270WSM has a slight edge in velocity over the 270 Weatherby Mag comming out of a 24" barrel. With a 130gr. bullet travelling over 3300fps, thats flat.
Unless the rifle is special it's hard to make a lightweight WSM as much as I like them. I think the Kimber 8400's are less than seven pounds if that's light.
For that game a 270 Winchester in 22" Featherweight barrel would do it just fine. That's a nice rifle.

I have a Tikka T3 Light/Stainless in 270WSM on the way. It has a 24 3/8" barrel and only weighs 6 3/8 lbs. The non magnum T3 Lite/Stainless weighs a 1/4 lbs less.

But, for my answer to the question, of your three choices, I'd go with one of the 7mm's, just better bullet selection. Probably easier to find rounds at the store with the 7-08, but you get quite a bit more poop with the WSM. Between the two; 7-08, they're just goats after all.

The 270 winchester is a magnum amongst the standards. I dont see any advantage in killing power or penetration until I get to a 300. just my observations

This is twice this morning that I find myself agreeing with Allen - once re: the effectiveness of the Partition and now with the .270 Win. Hard to go wrong with the .270 in a lightweight package: shoots flat, recoils little, is capable of excellent accuracy, and .277 bullets are made to perform at .270 Win. velocities. That and the spirit of Cactus Jack hovering nearby.
