It is an ultra light model 77. They all had a sorter pencil barrel and black forend tip and I believe the forend is shorter as well.1

OLD model 77's had tang safeties -- ultralites included (look carefully at the bolt: it *looks* like a Mauser, sort of, but it doesn't have a claw extractor, nor is it control-round-feed -- it is a push-feed).

There's an article on the history of the Ruger 77 in the new Rifle magazine (November, 2008). There's a picture showing both bolts. The MkI has a claw extractor, but it isn't CRF. It also has a button ejector rather than blade.

There's an interesting quote of Phil Shoemaker's estimation of the Model 77:
It's a modern pre-'64 Winchester Model 70...a great gun that always works.

Sort of -- the extractor IS a claw, but doesn't engage the rim until most of the way fed; it has a plunger extractor. I don't know what got in my head (likely the plunger ejector).

Ruger actualy calls the rifle , an RSI.
Mine is a MKII, chamberd for the .257 Roberts. The Ruger RSI is one of the lighter Bolt action rifles around.
And some shoot real well.
MY Roberts will often put 3 100 grain barnes TSXs into about 3/4 inch at 100 yards , and scoots them along at 3135.
The older MK1s have a better trigger than the MK IIs.
All in all I like the Ruger 77s. Both the tang safty and the MK 2s.
I have had several and the only 1 was a dud.

Thomas Jones,

I think he has a Ultra Lite, the RSI stands for Ruger Sporting International, it is a Mannlicher stocked (full stocked) rifle. They made RSI in the 77, and the #1.

Yep, it's a tang safety Ultralight. My wife shoots one in .257 Roberts with much success. It's a handy little rifle, though with the stock shortened for her it's a bit small for me (too bad). Hers reallly likes 100 grain TSXs over Re19.

505ED is right.
The Ruger ultra light is called the RL.
I had to free float the barrel to get it to shoot worth a darn but know its a very caurate rifle...tj3006

I have one in 257 Roberts and sanded out the hump they have in the forend of the stock so the barrel is free floating. It now shoots extremely well.
I did a trigger job on mine too. The quickest fix for the trigger is a simple spring change. The trigger on mine was not wonderful as the rifle came from the factory.
