I am looking for a couple of pre-Garcia Sako's in .270, .300 win mag and possibly .375 H&H. What would be a reasonable price to pay for these? I have checked Gun Broker and Guns America and do not see these very often. If you have one for sale, please PM me. Thanks

i'm not really up on sako prices, but the 270 & 300 I believe would be in the 12-1500 price range and the 375 will be over 2000. old sakos in 375 are going to be a tough find.

You're talking Finnbear or Deluxe? butchloc is right-on for 98% Deluxe SAKOs in 7Mag or 300Win. Finnbears go for $650-$950 depending on your luck and caliber. 7 Mags are usually harder to sell and therefore cheaper than 300s in my neck of the woods. The Deluxe is the same rifle in a fancier stock and has some solder drooled on the floorplate and trigger guard for decoration. The 375 Safaris are popular right now; $1800 is a steal, $2000-$2100 more likely. "Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

Used Sakos have undergone something of a "price push" due to the inflated price of new Sakos. Be that as it may, most sellers seem to be asking quite a bit more than most buyers are willing to pay, so the Sako market is slow when the seller is wanting a fantasyland price and fast when the seller is realistic. Nice standard grade "pre-Garcias" (and many rifles are advertised as such that are not -- check for a third locking lug on the L-61R, "Bofors Steel" on the barrel on most, a plastic grip cap on standard grade, and fixed sling swivels) start to move when the price gets down below $800 for most calibers. Of course, some sellers think that their gouged-stock, rubbed-off bluing guns with cut stocks and the previous owner's initials scratched in the floorplate are "nice ones". It is rare to see even a truly nice Deluxe go for more than a thousand, and even then it has to be cherry and in a less common caliber. For a "decent" .270 or .300 Win, expect to pay $600 or more, and the "more" depends on how close to original and clean it is (typically, even nice guns may be missing front sight hoods, have the recoil pad replaced, or have swivel studs in place of the original fixed swivels.) Add $200 for a Deluxe. Quality scope mounts with the gun are worth from $30 in the case of Redfields to maybe $75 for original Sakos (caution: pre-Garcia models had a slightly lower stock comb, so they require mounting the scope as low as possible to have proper eye positioning. Make sure that your objective bell is right down on the barrel for these guns.) Subtract $50 for Weaver bases on the general principal that a Sako that has been so defiled is forever a lesser gun. A .375 H & H is very rare in a pre-Garcia, so the above prices aren't relevant if you should find one. BUT, the "Garcias" had a (unnecessarily) heavier stock and beefier barrel than their sleeker predecessors, so a Garcia is actually a little better suited to the heavy caliber than its sleeker predecessor.

Stonecreek I sent you a PM. Do you know if a .270 with a serial number at 503xxx is old enough to be a pre-garcia? Thanks
