And you are quite unhandy at "getting" the facts before you comment.

If you read the thread, you will find I stated my purpose before you ever made your offensive comment.

C'est la vie. Beliecve what ever you will.

I'm having one built right now on a BAT repeater action with a Bartlein barrel, Jewell trigger and McMillan A-5 stock. I can't wait to get my hands on it!

Let's face it, if you are only going to hunt North America all one NEEDS is a 30/06, what a sad thing that would be......

I usually agree with Roger but I think it's a little more than a fringe cartridge. Almost every rifle maker offers a short action in 3 calibers, 308, 7-08, and 243. It's pretty much offered everywhere. It's even offered in makers inexpensive lines like Ruger American & Marlin X7, Savage Axis, etc.. It's become a standard short action offering for just about all rifle makers.

Are more manufacturers offering the 7-08 than the 7x57 ? I think maybe so, don't know. That tells a lot either way.

Scott, the Savage Axis does not come in a short action, not even in the .223 Rem.
I have Axis' in both 223 and .308 Win.
I'm not sure that your post meant that or not. Just saying.

True, I guess it's not a short action but it's offered in the Axis with a short bolt and short magazine Smiler .

Scott, actually no. The action and bolt are long action. I am not sure if the clip is a little shorter than say an '06 length clip but the clip is the same length for the 308 and 223 but is blocked off for the 223 length. I have not seen the Savage Axis in '06 length. The trigger guard piece may come in a shorter length with a bigger magazine opening for a 270/30-06 length, I'm not sure.
The Axis design is really a neat and simplistic design.

I have wanted one for awhile, I had planned on re-barreling my Model 700 in .243 with a hart barrel and McMillan stock in 7-08 this year. But instead I ended up getting a .585 Hubel Express, so the 7-08 will have to wait.

Rather unusual caliber in my neck of the woods 10-12 years ago.

I never had even seen or heard of one until I bought one in 2000 or so.

I know many people that hunt with them now.

AC, what, exactly, were you trying to prove by using an archaic word like scurrilously? Even when used incorrectly. Do you know what it means?

I'd take a 7mm-'08 if I liked the gun. It's all about the look for me.

Albert:

I did a lot of my deer hunting with a 7mm Rem Mag. It's a wonderful cartridge but even living out here on the plains, most of my hunting could have easily have been done with a 7/08. I think it's a great cartridge, especially with Hornady Superperformance ammo. I sure don't think it is going to fade away. As to your question, I don't plan to buy one because I have had such good luck with a little .257 Bob. With the Bob, I can get great muzzle velocity/performance with that fantastic little 100 grain TSX and Ramshot Hunter.

Roll EyesGood question ! Are you considering other countries also?
Confused Would another good question be: are there more 7 x 57s in the world than 7-08s ?
old Another . Will the 7-08 ever catch up? Me thinks not. There are too many military and military conversions still in use.
fishingThose manufacturing 7-08s will have to go a long way to "ketchup".
Getting back to the original question; the 7-08 will never be a main stream seller ( too much big mover competition ) ,* ergo* fringe.
holycow Your verbiage is OK with me AC beerroger

For those who do not handload, the 7-08 is an outstanding caliber for deer and even elk..

For the handloader the 7x57 walks of and leaves the 7-08 in the dust..

Barsche,
Rebarreling any rifle to a 250-3000 is no less than holy! amen! love them 250s. tu2

Balistically comparing the 7-08 to the 7x57 from a reloaders standpoint..The 7x57 wins by a bunch, stay tuned:

My 2 7x57s are built with a 06 length magazine on a G33-40 and a mod.21 Brno mauser action, they have a throat long enough to seat a 160 gr TSX bullet .284 deep (one caliber) Using H414 powder I can easily get 2900 plus FPS with that bullet and 2600 FPS with the 175 gr. with a grain under my max load...I can get 3200 FPS with a 130 gr. Speer but load it at 3100 FPS, and I can duplicate the 7 mag factory loads with the 140 gr. bullet, but the factory 7 mag loads are underloaded btw...

This set up method is basically the same powder capacity as a Ackley IMP or the std. 280 Rim..but still shoots standard 7x57 but without fireforming..

The factory loaded 7x57 are terribly underloaded because of the many Mod. 95, and 96s floating around so comparing book velocity is not fair to the caliber..

BTW, all Brno mod. 21s and 22s are so set up at the factory and will do the same as my Mausers.

Thus my suggestion that the 7-08 is best for the non handloader, but not for the handloader.
Both are grand cartridges and the 7-08 is here to stay, its a great short action round, but the 7x57 didn't hold its popularity by being a casper milk toast caliber..Its the lightest caliber that I would hunt any animal on earth with if I had to.
