Unfortuanately the members of the "Death Cult" all have misstamped bores that read plain ole .280 Rem.

A question for you .280 nuts.
I have a Remington BDL DM that shoots 139-gr Hornadies right into the bull at 100 yds.

BUT, I can't hit squat from the stand! I'm talking head and neck shots around 100 yards. And, I'm missing high.

My 721 in .300 H&H wears a 3 x 9 Leupold and I do fine with it. The aforementioned .280 also wears a Leupold, a 4 x 12. Both rifles have medium height mounts.

Question : Could using the scope at 12 power be my "problem"? Perhaps the eye no longer centers the outer ring ("black hole") in the eyepiece at 12x and my hold is higher??

Did you use the 12 power on test groups on the bench? I have seen more than one scope that moves its zero point with changing the magnification, checking this out at 4 power, 6-8 power and 12 on the bench will answer this.

If it was me I would start there with the bench answers, then I would find a place to shoot with a drop off and reproduce the elevation drop and sight in the rifle. I hunt a lot in very mountainous country and elevation causes the exact problem you are describing to a lot of hunters, the downhill shot looks and lasers 100 yards to your eye, but in a straight line on the level your only shooting 60 yards for instance, hence your bullet is subject to gravity of 60 yards, its a 60 yard shot in reality, and high is the result.

My answer is when sighting my rifles is 1-2" high on everything. When shooting on a incline ( UP or down) I aim low on my target ( 8" zone on a deer, lower quandrant ) at 100 yards, right on at 200 yards. This lets me leave my rifles so they are good up to just at 300 yards with no windage correction ( aim high at 300 yards and I am still in the 8" zone with bullet drop at that distance ).
