What are yalls pet loads for a 150gr bullet in a 270 Winchester? The bullet will be the Barnes TSX but I dont think which bullet, as long as its a spitzer, matters. Thanks Perry

H-4831 has been the "go to" powder for the .270 for ever.....and for both the 130 and 150 grain bullets. RL-22, IMR-7828 and Win WMR are also great powders here. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." I have two P-64 Mod. 70 Fwts. in .270W. and have owned about a dozen .270s since 1968; I just sold a Husqie HAV 4100 and a Husqie 1951, so chambered as I can't find time to shot them. I have used several powders, but, since the early 1990s, I have used RE-22 exclusively. Here ar my loads and they are MAX. in my rifles, so, start 7% below this charge. WW brass RE-22-60 grs. CCI 250 150 NP 2900 fps-mv-av. chronoéd. Fed. nickel brass RE-22-58.5 grs CCI 250 150 NP 2900 fps-mv-av. chronoed. The first, well-used rifle usually does about an inch with this load and seems OK at at 90*F temps, with easy extraction and no loose primer pockets in three firings. I would NOT go hotter, tho'. The second, hardly fired rifle does about .5-.6"consistently with this load and there are no excess pressure indications. Both rifles now wear 3x9x40 Zeiss Conquests and I consider these to be optimum loads for BC hunting.

Well 57 grs Reloader 22 was the winner. Just shy of 2800 fps and bullets were touching. H4831 was a close second with H4350 right behind at 1" groups. I really appreciate all of yalls help! Perry

Here's a little insight into working up loads for a friend. If your after 150gr loads in a 270 Win. have the courtesy to send a rifle with a recoil pad. His rifle is one of the older Remingtons with the high cheek piece, the one that instead of spreading recoil over 5 inches it raises up and hits you on the point of your shoulder. I was beaten like a rented mule! The books said I could've gotten 2850-2900 fps but my shoulder said that I had found the perfect load. His comment was "yah, that thing really kick huh". oh what we do for friendship, and the obsession to achieve perfect loads. Perry

Using 57,5 gr. of original H-4831 under Rem 150 SPCL bullets and Fed. 210 caps in Rem. brass, bullets seated about .045: off the lands, I get a safe 2980 fps from a 24" .270 Howa. It works fine but that's in MY rifle, not anyone elses!

I still have a batch of old surplus 4831, the stuff that Jack O'Connor touted and he was right, it cooks..Gets me an extra 100 FPS and less pressure in the .270.. Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com

H4831 is tops in the .270 in my experience. Going back through my reloading notes I'm seeing 55 grains as giving a hair over 2900fps. I know I used to stuff 56 grains into a case for average velocity of 2943fps, but one of my manuals is telling me that's 1 grain over book max (the other lists 58 grains, so proceed with caution). I used that load on black bear and moose and it performed perfectly, very complete penetration and expansion, gave just over MOA accuracy (average 1.125" @ 100 yards) out of my 24" M700. ________ "...And on the 8th day, God created beer so those crazy Canadians wouldn't take over the world..."

Back when I was a solid 270 or nuthing fan I used 57.5 grains of new H4831 under the 150 grain Speer. My custom Mauser had a 21 inch barrel and I don't know how fast the Speer was going. I do know it killed all creatures up to elk with ease in the open country of Wyoming and ws easy to get in and out of the truck with. Very happy with 150gr. Partitions and either H-4831 or H-4350. The H-4831 give higher velocity in my rifle but the H-4350 gives occcational one hole groups and consistant 1.5 MOA accuracy. The very best accuracy lately has been 130gr. AccuBonds and H-4350. A few 3 shot ragged holes and consistant MOA.

My own .270 Winchester uses 58.5 grains of Reloder 22 with a 150 Hornady with great results. While developing a load for this rifle I played with all of the brands of primers. This rifle loves Remington 9 1\2's. They outperformed the benchrest caps from Federal. An old loading manual stated that the Remington large rifle primers were good in .270's, 22-250's, and 25-06's. Ed Matunus was correct.
