Both are super premium bullets, and will flatten your elk. That 250 grain load should shoot like a 180 grain ‘06, but inflict more damage. Matt FISH!! Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984: "Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."

Yes But if I had to pick I would go with the 250s as 2700fps is a good hunting velocity.

Have you done a trajectory plot?

In a field situation, either the 250 gr. or the 286 shoots flat enough for elk hunting..I would opt for the 286 Nosler myself, as it was my favorite load for quite some time, no regrets..and it will penetrate an elk from stim to stern, and at longer ranges its got a bit more thump than the 250 gr. My experience with 250 gr. bullets is they were fine on PG, a bit weak on the larger stuff like Eland, waterbuck and what not...If I wanted a 250 gr. Id opt for the 338 Win. for a bit more range..Not saying a 250 won't get the job done, but that the 286 is where the 9.3s made their reputation, and rightly so IMO.... My experience with the 286 is it seems to shoot flatter than the paper ballistics claim..!! IN the beginning I tended to over shoot at game, so I quite holding over and all went well. I used the 3" high at 100, still 3" high at 200 and and on at about 300, I recall a long shot that I held on the back line with some air under the cross hair and a instant kill...Ive been told by some experts that the 3" high method is a poor practice, but its worked for me and some of the best hunters I know..Jack O'Connor convienced me of that many years ago and he was the best game shot Ive ever known or witnessed..but to each his own, and I suggest whatever works for you.. 286 gr in Barnes x did wonders for me a number of times. You can borrow money but you can not borrow time. Go hunting with your family.

Well...given 2700 fps with a 250 grn TSX is a 150 fps above book max with a 26 inch bbl and the TTSX takes up more case capacity (it's a longer bullet) that 2700 may be a bit on the generous side...but let's assume you can achieve it. You have plenty of trajectory and residual velocity out to 450 yards. Now, if you getting say book max of 2550 with a 26 inch barrel and I believe the R8 in 9,3x62 is a 23" inch bbl so let's deduct 75 fps you are now at 2475. If you zero at 200, your trajectory is: 100 +2.5 200 0 300 - 10.0 350 - 18.2 400 - 28.8 with 1853 fps of velocity and above min exp velocity of 1600 for the bullet. So, it will work fine but I would definitely use some type of BDC reticle. Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

I would not hesitate to use the 250 gr. Barnes TTSX on elk. I shot several African plains game with that bullet from a Ruger #1S in 9.3x62. The muzzel velocity was almost exactly 2500 fps. The biggest animal I shot was an old eland bull. I also shot a waterbuck that gives a good idea of penetration. The shot was at about 150 yards. He was almost facing me and I hit him just inside the right shoulder in the chest. The bullet angled through the body and was just under the skin where the right hind quarter meets the body. That was about 4 feet of penetration. He turned and managed to run about 20 yards. The bullet was a perfect mushroom and maintained 100% of its weight.

Id feel just OK with a 250 gr Monolithic on African PG..Id prefer the 286 monolithic on DG..and it would suit me for PG, elk and deer. Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com

It would be fine on Texas whitetail, but so is the 25-35..and a 125 gr. 30-06..I wouldn't recommend it for elk to the average hunter, unless you had the discipline to take only broadside shots under ideal concitions..Ive hunted under those circumstances and did just fine, but I had to pass on some real trophy animals so that's always a consideration.
