Some of you asked that I report my findings on the .270WSM. I still have a few pigs and a bunch of cull deer to shoot this year, but it's been absolutely devastating so far. All the kills have been filmed so you can really see what I am talking about. Every animal except for one dropped in their tracks. Animals taken so far are:

1. Prongorn buck, 453 yards. Took him just at the back of the shoulder and he ran about 40 yards.

2. 11 point Whitetail - 100 yards, broadside, bam-flop.

3. Whitetail doe. 90 yards, dropped in her tracks

4. Whitetail doe. 160 yards. Another Bam-flop

5. Whitetail buck. Mid 140's 8-point, 22" inside spread, plus 2 kickers. Live weight of around 225 pounds (huge for Texas). 200 yards, facing me, base of the throat. Bam-flop.

6. 250 pound Feral hog, 50 yards quartering, bam-flop again.

7. Javelina boar, 40 yards broadside, bam-flop.

All of these animals had extensive internal damage. I am shooting the 130gr. Ballistic Silvertip. I am going to shoot a few more pigs and several Whitetails before the end of our season and I will update this at that time. I left another .270WSM with a rancher friend and he has taken 5 deer and a 300 pound pig, all bam-flops, too. I am impressed so far.

Hi Greg:

Thanks for the update on performance of the 270 WSM. I have used mine this past week for the PA Deer Season, here are my results.

I am also using the 130 Ballistic Silvertips. They group under 3/4 in at 100 yards.

Coaching my nephew in our blind, opening morning nice six pointer, at about 75 yards, quartering away, shot just behind the left shoulder. Entered left front and exited opposite side. Took out everything above the heart, all the plumming, and the lungs were non existant. Deer ran around in tight 10 ft circle and dropped dead.

Second was a big bodied eight pointer, shot just shy of 100 yards, broadisde behind right front shoulder. As Greg would say, Bam-flop. Took out heart, lungs and everything in between, the bullet never exited, and the big buck never took another step.

This year I used a 300 RUM in Africa on Plains Game. I had 5 one shot kills with the very fast 300 Ultra and 180 grain Nosler bullets. I shot everything from Zebra to Warthogs.

I am experiencing the same devastating killing power in the 270 WSM. on deer size game.

I believe if you put your shot where it counts with these very fast cartrdges, with Ballistic Tip bullets, or Premiums, they hit like the hammer of God. The key phrase being where it counts, in the chest cavity.

Again, the 270 WSM is one HELL of a caliber and a winner in my book.

.270 Winchester, 130 gr Nosler Solid Base @ 3200 fps, whitetail doe, broadside at 450 yards -- bam-flop. Ten-point mature whitetail buck, 225 yards on the run, bam-flop. So what else is new? You squeeze 50 extra fps of muzzle velocity out with the same bullet and it continues to do the outstanding job of game-taking it has done for the last 67 years.

Of all the short mags this is the only one I have interest in. That being said how bad was the blood shot meat. I'm a meat hunter that also likes headgear, but I'm not really into alot of bloodshot.

Hi Rogue:

I did not do an autopsy and did not skin and butcher the deer mysely. But I do believe the only blood shot meat would be on the first shoulder the bullet would hit, if any. I was inspecting the chest cavity on both deer after I cleaned them and they looked pretty good.

In previous years I have skinned and butchered many deer myself, so I know what kind of damage a very fast light fragile bullet can do to meat.

The only problem I can see with this caliber is if a poor shot is made, say in the guts or in the rear quarter, it may be hard to track a wounded animal without an exit wound. That is to say IF the bullet does not exit.

The last 9 head of big game that I have shot have all gone down almost immediately or in a few feet with the fast caliber selections. But they were all in the chest cavity hits, thank God.

But no body strives to shoot poorly. So I believe that the fast killing power of these bullets out way the greater penetration of a slower heavier bullet on deer size game.

Good Hunting & Shoot Straight...

Jim P

Day before yesterday. 100lb central texas doe. 270 winchester with 150 grain remington round nose from wallmart. Bam-flop. 150 yards (long in our brush and cedar). Half dollar size exit and lots of blood. Shoots about 1 inch groups in my Model 70 featherweight. $10.00 a box. This is my favorite rifle after my Browning FN 30-06.

I reload and all that stuff, but most of my exotic ammo goes with my kids Elk hunting in Colorado. Which I am not really able to do anymore.
