The Remington Light Tactical Rifle (LTR) is intended to be a SWAT sniper rifle, as its 20" barrel is not idea for long shots.

At 7.5 lbs, how do you think it would do as a hunting rifle?

In 308 and with really good optics, I have often thought it would make the perfect stand gun for inside 500yds. With the Barnes 130gr TSX you might push it further.

I have hunted with mine quite a bit I trained with one to shoot one kind of animal and it works great for that purpose also works great for other kinds of animals. I like it much better than the full 26 in vs drop is more but not much. I worked with a supressed 308 and it had 12.5 in of bbl and worked great out to 600 so I dont think it is a big deal the short bbl and it is real handy.

i guess it depends on what you consider long, huh?
while not a remington my steyr SBS tactical light (20" 308") has been used out to 280 yards on standing whitetail deer with amazing accuracy.
the bullet itself is what kills the deer, not the length of the BBL. energy is based on bullet weight and speed. surte your going to lose a little speed w/ a shorter barrel but not so much its not going to kill.
my steyr tactical shoots GM308M @ 2550. thats pleant energy out to 500 for a whitetail.

As to hitting the target at long ranges, up to 600yards with short barrel, 20" in length, not a problem, but that is with a trained and practiced marksman. Average hunter can not even visualize the distance of 600 yards or more. If shots are at "normal" hunting ranges, not a problem at all.
Again, the rifle is quite capapble of fine performance at long range of 600, but not for the average hunter and would always discourage long range shooting at game. Leave that up to the military types. Wounding in military applications is not a big issue!!

PS AR15/16's routinely shoot .5moa groups at 600 yards with issue/iron sights and barrel length is 20" Go figure!

I have hunted with a LTR in 300SAUM this year and I love it. If I hunt out of a climber it is nice and compact. If I hunt a field, I can shoot out to 300yds with holding dead on. I zero 2in. high at a 100yds. It has a vari-x iii 3.5*10*50 and feels lighter than my 788 .308 carbine with a vx-ii 3*9*50. the 788's barrel is 18.75 in. .

THanks for all the good insights.

I have a Rem 700 SPS Youth Model with a 20" stock, which is similar to the LTR.

But I just went on their site and found they now have a "SPS Tactical" which has a bull 20" barrel and one of those cool Hogue overmolded stocks.

Doh! As soon as I get a rifle, they come out with one I like better.

One of the huge advantages with the LTR is its HS precison stock which is of far greater quality than hogues!

I have done a lot of hunting and shooting with 308 rifles with barrels in the 18 to 20 inch range.

I have shot several of them with hunting ammo and Federal Match on paper out to 600 yards, and to 800 yards on steel.

You do need a little more up at the longer ranges vs a longer barrel, but they shoot as accurate as the longer bbled rifles.

I think that a 18 to 20 inch 308 is a great hunting rifle. It is one of my favorites.

Would a LTR in .308 fitted with a 1 lbs surpressor be much heavier than a standard 26" remington wood stocked rifle you guys think?

If you mean the wood stocked heavy bbled varmint model, probably not much.

A standard wood stocked Remington 700 with a Weaver T-10 will sometimes be under 10lbs 2oz, some times over due to the density of the wood.
