What's the fps that folks are getting with 220 grains in a 300 H&H? I'm considering a 8mm Remington Mag or 8x68s and was wondering if you can get close to 2800-2900 fps with 220 grains in a 300 H&H?

In a .30 cal Magnum bullet construction is more important than a few grains in weight IMHO.

I would much prefer [and it is what I have used]
a 200gr Premium bullet to a common cup and core 220gr bullet...

I am a biog fan of the 300 WBY or the 300 Win Mag with 180 and 200gr Premium bullets...

Before I got an 8mm mag or an 8x68s I would go to a 338 Win Mag or a 340 WBY Mag...

Much easier to find ammo, bullets, brass, etc...

A spitzer 200 grain bullet is going to have a lot more "umph" when it hits the target 50 or more yards distance than will a round nose 220 grain bullet, so my question is why would you wish to use the 220? What manner of beast is it that is vulnerable to a 220 that isn't to a 200?

My H&H will toss a 200 grainer at around 2850 without strain, so I would guess something well under 2800 would be the practical maximum for the 220 bullet. Even an 8mm Rem has difficulty exceeding 2900 fps with a 220 grain bullet.

Nosler makes a 220 gr. partition. According to the Nosler manual you an get up to 2703 FPS with IMR-7828. I think that mightput a hur on something.

Thanks. I settled on making a 300 H&H on an Enfield action a while back, but have been noodling a 8mm cartridge; but .30 caliber is more flexible and if I need a 220 grain, it will have a higher SD than a 8mm 225 grain.
