I'm thinking of finally starting on the project that has been sitting in the safe for awhile.

It is a sporterized Mauser, I believe pre WWII (I think I remember '39, but it has the Wehrmacht eagles on it). Right now it has Weaver bases on that has the top of the receiver covered. Every metal part remaining has matching serial numbers except for the bolt which has a replacement or reforged bolt handle and a right side, up-down, wing safety. In addition to the scope base holes, someone also had, at one time, a receiver mounted aperature sight. Now there are two holes and some "grinding" there on the right rear of the action.

That all said, this conversion will be for a working rifle. All work will be farmed out. Plan is to possibly weld up receiver sight holes and recontour, replace safety with Winchester M70 type, replace trigger with Timney, rebarrel with Lothar Walther barrel in 9.3x62, and restock with a Boyds Classic in nutmeg laminant with several of their new custom options. I'm also considering a set of NEGG sights, probably a Masterpiece Banded Ramp front sight and Classic rear sight. All would then be reblued to match best as possible. I'll probably put a 1.5-5 Leupold on it. I'm not sure what to do about about the scope mounts, but I'm thinking of ordering a custom drilled set from Talley.

Two questions, Lothar Walther Contour #718 or #720, and Gentry or LaPour safety? Anything else that I might be missing?

Thanks.

If it was mine & I wanted a 9.3X62 (I already have a Simson) here is what I would do.

Get a octogon to round full length ribbed barrel from Lothar Walther.

Get a nice English walnut stock and get it correctly profiled to fit. Leave the scope option open.

Make sure the bottom metal is hinged.

Put NECG open sights on & may be a peep option - keep it simple.

Barrel band front swivel.

Rust blue the metal and oil finish the stock.

Keep the cost to under $3k.

Red,

I selected the #720 barrel but it's capped off at 20" - at this legnth it's perfect, sorta stubby if I wanted a longer, 22" or 24" perhaps the #718 is O.K.

My Gunsmith did this for me - a great functional detail & looks Cool, too.

I have no idea what safety I have but chose a type L/H Winchester swing type safety - IMO perfect choice.

For a working/inexpensive conversion rifle I wouldn't get too worked up about the barrel contour - they all shoot.

Good Luck w/your 9.3x62.

Cheers,

I went with the 718 contour at 23" on mine with NECG furniture.
