Short barrels are OK in a 9.3x62, but they will suffer a good deal of velocity loss if that is important to you..

My 9.3x62 has a 26" barrel and I can get some absolutly awsome velocities out of it, right up there with a 375 H&H with the Woodliegh 320 gr. bullets at 2450 FPS or 2800 plus a tad FPS with a 250 gr. Nosler Balistic tip..

I think the 9.3x62 deserves a long tube...

I know that you have a lot of experience but i must differ with your opinion on the 9.3X62. The case capacity is not enough with its bore size to warrant a long barrel. The 9.3X62 is basically an improved 30-06 case, and once that .366" bore is added complete combustion can be obtained from shorter barrels. The 9.3X62 has gotten its reputation from slow moving, heavy projectiles so i dont see how an extra 150 fps is going to improve it.

Fgulla,
I have no problem with a short barrel in a 9.3x62, but the ones I have owned and the one I have now shows a big improvment in velocity with a 26 inch barrel, the chronograph does not lie...150 FPS wherever that figure comes from is substantial IMO but only with heavy bullets such as a 320 gr. Woodleigh RN bullet, It would not be much with a 130 gr. bullet in a .270, what I am saying is everything is relitive...

My tests show in a Oberndorf 20 inch gun that I had a year ago, got 2155 FPS with a 320 gr. Woodleigh, with my present 9.3 and 26" barrel, I get 2432 FPS with a max load and the 320 gr. Woodleigh. and 2408 FPS with a 300 gr. Swift..That is substantial IMO...

The 9.3x62 did make its rep with a slow bullet, but I get the impression from shooting some of the big boys with it that the faster load kills buff better at my velocity with a good premium bullet, than it did does with the slower load....Granted I have not shot a great amount of Buffalo with both loads but I have shot several with each and that was my impression, right or wrong...
