I found a like new HS precision in 284 win and was wondering if it would be a good cartridge for long range (500yds) deer/antelope, I already have a 270 that shoots ok but not superb, and was thinking this gun is guaranteed to shoot 1/2 moa. I guess mostly I am wondering if this is a chambering worth owning.

I've owned 3 or 4 284s, most of them on custom throated LAs. It is a fine round, capable of excellent accuracy. It runs at impressive pressure as well (higher than the 7mm RM). Case life was always good. For long range deer I'd try the 120 gr X-bullet @ 3300 fps or so.

Good luck.

The .284 Win. is a great cartridge. It'll do pretty much whatever the .270 Win. or .280 Rem. will do at long-range, and on the same sort of big game animals.

Why do you say that? For shooting the light bullets, a SA would be fine.

I guess your right I really wouldn't load heavy bullets anyway, cause I would rather have the speed (and of course it wouldn't have to be my all purpose gun)
